CHAPTER 3 — THE BILLIONAIRE WHO RAN TOWARD THE PAST

CHAPTER 3 — THE BILLIONAIRE WHO RAN TOWARD THE PAST
James Holloway did not remember leaving the boardroom.
Later, his executive assistant would tell reporters he had apologized before walking out.
His CFO would insist James had looked calm.
The security footage would show something different.
The moment he heard Claire's voice, every carefully built layer of control disappeared.
Eight years.
Eight years without hearing her laugh.
Eight years without hearing her cry.
And now she was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
"Jay..."
That one broken word was enough.
"Tell me where you are."
"...St... St. Catherine's."
"What happened?"
"Our baby..."
James stopped walking.
"Our?"
Claire inhaled sharply.
"No... not yours..."
A sob swallowed the rest.
"My daughter..."
"I understand."
He didn't ask whose child it was.
He didn't ask why she was calling now.
He only asked the one question that mattered.
"Are you safe?"
Claire looked across the hallway.
Derek was glaring at her like she had committed a crime.
She answered honestly.
"I don't know anymore."
James's voice became frighteningly calm.
"I'm on my way."
"I'm sorry..."
"You don't apologize for asking for help."
"I left you."
"I know."
"I don't deserve—"
"Claire."
She closed her eyes.
"I'm coming."
The line went dead.
Thirty-two floors above Manhattan, the headquarters of Holloway Technologies erupted into confusion.
"Cancel everything."
James didn't raise his voice.
He never needed to.
Within seconds, assistants were sprinting across polished marble floors.
His head of security caught up with him near the private elevator.
"Sir?"
"Hospital."
"Which one?"
"St. Catherine's."
"Medical emergency?"
"Yes."
"Family?"
James hesitated.
The answer surprised even him.
"...Yes."
The security chief didn't ask another question.
Back at the hospital...
Claire lowered her phone.
For the first time all day, she wasn't shaking.
Not because things were better.
Because someone had finally said the words she'd needed to hear.
I'm coming.
Derek laughed.
"You actually called him."
Claire didn't answer.
"He won't come."
Silence.
"He probably changed his number years ago."
"He answered."
Derek's smile disappeared.
"So what?"
"He said he's coming."
Derek rolled his eyes.
"A billionaire is going to leave work because his ex-girlfriend called?"
Jennifer quietly looked away.
She had seen enough of life to know miracles sometimes wore expensive suits.
Five minutes later...
Dr. Sutherland rushed back into the hallway.
"The baby's heart rate is crashing."
Claire stood.
"What do we do?"
"We need to operate."
"You said you needed authorization."
"I do."
Claire looked desperately between the doctor and Derek.
"Derek..."
"No."
One word.
Cold.
Final.
Claire grabbed his sleeve.
"Please."
He pulled away.
"I already told you."
"She's your daughter!"
He looked directly into her eyes.
"We can't afford a child who starts life with millions in medical bills."
Jennifer gasped.
Another nurse muttered,
"Oh my God..."
Claire felt something inside her finally die.
Not hope.
Love.
She had spent three years trying to save a marriage.
In one sentence...
Derek buried it.
The automatic hospital doors slid open.
Nobody noticed at first.
A tall man in a charcoal overcoat walked inside, followed by four security officers.
Rain clung to his shoulders.
His tie was crooked.
His hair looked like he'd run his hands through it during the drive.
He looked nothing like the polished billionaire from magazine covers.
He looked like a man terrified of arriving too late.
The receptionist froze.
"Oh..."
One nurse whispered,
"Is that..."
Another answered,
"It can't be..."
Then everyone recognized him.
James Holloway.
The billionaire whose face appeared on television almost every week.
The man worth more than entire corporations.
He ignored every staring face.
Ignored security.
Ignored the reporters beginning to gather outside after spotting his convoy.
His eyes searched only one person.
Claire.
She looked smaller than he remembered.
Paler.
Covered in blood.
Barefoot.
Holding herself together by sheer will.
James crossed the hallway.
Stopped in front of her.
For a long second...
Neither spoke.
Finally...
He gently took off his coat.
Wrapped it around her shoulders.
She burst into tears.
"I'm sorry..."
James looked at the blood on her hospital gown.
Then at the payment estimate in her trembling hand.
Then toward the operating room.
His jaw tightened.
"What happened?"
Claire couldn't answer.
Jennifer did.
"Her daughter needs emergency fetal surgery."
James nodded once.
"How much?"
"Eighty-seven thousand for immediate authorization."
He reached into his jacket.
Removed a black titanium card.
Placed it into Jennifer's hand.
"Authorize everything."
Jennifer blinked.
"Everything?"
James looked toward Dr. Sutherland.
"If there is another treatment..."
"Another surgeon..."
"Another machine..."
"Another hospital..."
"I don't care what it costs."
His voice never rose.
"Save her."
Dr. Sutherland hesitated.
"The total NICU care could exceed—"
James interrupted.
"Did I ask for the estimate?"
Silence.
"No."
"Then save the baby."
Derek finally stepped forward.
"Excuse me."
James turned slowly.
"And you are?"
"I'm her husband."
James looked at Claire.
She lowered her eyes.
That was answer enough.
James nodded politely.
Then asked the question that changed everything.
"If you're her husband..."
"...why is she standing here alone?"
No one answered.
Jennifer looked away.
Dr. Sutherland looked away.
Even Derek couldn't speak.
May you like
James understood.
Without another word.
