Chapter 7: The Trial of Truth

Chapter 7: The Trial of Truth
The courtroom was full long before the judge entered.
Reporters lined the back wall.
Advocates for survivors filled the gallery.
Ryan sat at the defense table in a tailored navy suit, looking almost identical to the man I had married.
Only his eyes had changed.
The confidence was gone.
In its place was desperation.
Victoria sat behind him.
Alone.
She hadn't spoken to her son since the day she watched the security footage.
When the judge entered, the room stood.
The civil divorce hearing and the domestic violence proceedings had been coordinated to avoid conflicting testimony.
Claire rose first.
"Your Honor, the petitioner requests permission to present video evidence."
"Granted."
The courtroom lights dimmed.
For the second time, Ryan watched himself become the witness against himself.
The footage played from beginning to end.
No edits.
No narration.
Just facts.
The prosecutor then played the bathroom audio.
Ryan's own voice echoed through the courtroom.
"Nobody will ever believe you."
The words sounded different now.
Smaller.
Pathetic.
The judge removed his glasses.
"Mr. Carter," he said, "would you like to explain this recording?"
Ryan stood.
"It wasn't what it looks like."
The judge raised an eyebrow.
"What exactly does striking your wife look like?"
Ryan searched for an answer.
None came.
His attorney attempted another approach.
"My client was under extraordinary emotional stress."
Claire immediately stood.
"So was my client."
She paused.
"Only one of them committed a crime."
The courtroom fell silent.
Then came the witness everyone had been waiting for.
Victoria.
She walked slowly to the stand.
Ryan looked relieved.
"Mom..."
She never looked at him.
After taking the oath, she answered Claire's first question.
"Mrs. Carter, did you ever encourage your son to hit Ava?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"No."
Claire waited.
"Did you tell him not to hit her face?"
A tear rolled down Victoria's cheek.
"Yes."
The room became impossibly still.
"I said those words."
"I thought..."
She struggled to continue.
"I thought bruises could be hidden."
Ryan whispered,
"Mom..."
She finally turned toward him.
"I failed you."
Then she looked at me.
"And I failed her."
Her testimony lasted less than twenty minutes.
It destroyed what remained of Ryan's defense.
By the end of the day, the judge granted the divorce, issued a permanent protection order, and ordered Ryan to pay restitution for property damage and medical expenses.
The criminal case would continue separately.
As deputies escorted Ryan toward the holding area, he looked back one last time.
"I loved you."
I met his eyes.
"No."
I spoke the word that had changed everything.
"You loved control."
He lowered his head.
May you like
For the first time since I had known him...
He had nothing left to say.
