Chapter 5: The Vault Behind the Bookshelf

Chapter 5: The Vault Behind the Bookshelf
The library smelled exactly as it had when my father was alive.
Leather-bound books.
Old cedar.
Fresh coffee that no longer existed except in memory.
For three years, Ryan had sat in this room believing it made him look successful. He had posed for business calls in my father's chair, hosted clients beneath my father's portrait, and bragged about "his" study.
He had never realized the room had been designed to keep secrets.
Claire rolled the blueprint across the desk.
"The note says west bookshelf."
I counted the shelves.
The fifth section held a complete collection of classic novels. Nothing unusual.
Until I noticed one volume sitting slightly farther back than the others.
A weathered copy of The Count of Monte Cristo.
My father's favorite book.
I pulled it forward.
A soft click echoed through the library.
The entire bookshelf shifted less than an inch.
Claire looked at me.
"I'd say that's it."
Together we pushed.
Hidden hinges moved silently, revealing a narrow steel door built into the wall.
A biometric scanner.
A keypad.
And beneath them...
A tiny brass keyhole.
My heart pounded.
"The keys," I whispered.
I reached into the envelope that had held my father's letter.
Taped inside was a small brass key I hadn't noticed before.
It fit perfectly.
The scanner lit green.
The lock released.
The steel door swung inward.
Inside wasn't money.
It was something far more valuable.
Shelves filled with neatly labeled boxes.
Hard drives.
Flash drives.
Bound contracts.
Photographs.
A fireproof safe.
And a single black binder labeled:
IF RYAN EVER HURTS AVA
Claire slowly exhaled.
"Your father suspected him?"
"I don't think so."
I picked up the binder.
"I think he suspected human nature."
Inside were instructions.
Detailed.
Organized.
Every asset.
Every trust.
Every emergency contact.
Every attorney.
Every insurance policy.
And one final section titled:
Personal Investigations.
Claire frowned.
"What investigations?"
I turned the page.
Ryan's photograph.
Dated four years before our wedding.
My stomach tightened.
There were surveillance reports.
Financial background checks.
Employment history.
Private investigator notes.
The final report read:
Subject displays narcissistic tendencies.
History of concealed debt.
Pattern of relationships with financially secure women.
Recommend extreme caution before marriage.
My hands began shaking.
"My father knew."
Claire nodded slowly.
"He investigated every man you dated."
I kept reading.
The investigator had interviewed Ryan's former coworkers.
A former girlfriend.
Even his previous landlord.
One statement caught my eye.
Subject repeatedly claims he is "destined to live rich."
Frequently states wealthy women are easier to manipulate emotionally.
I suddenly couldn't breathe.
Had Ryan ever loved me?
Or had he simply chosen me?
Claire rested a gentle hand on my shoulder.
"Ava..."
Tears filled my eyes.
"I ignored every warning."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You were deceived."
Before I could answer, her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Then her expression changed.
"What happened?"
She listened silently.
Her face hardened.
"When?"
Another pause.
"I'll be there."
She ended the call.
"Ryan."
My heartbeat accelerated.
"What now?"
"He emptied a storage unit this morning."
"So?"
"The investigator who worked for your father had copies of his reports."
"He kept them there."
My chest tightened.
"And?"
Claire met my eyes.
"The storage unit was broken into last night."
Across town...
Ryan slammed the empty filing cabinet shut.
"There has to be more."
His old college friend, Derek, kicked another box across the concrete floor.
"We're too late."
Ryan grabbed a photograph from the floor.
Me.
Smiling.
Standing beside my father.
On the back someone had written:
She is the heir. Don't underestimate her.
Ryan crushed the picture in his fist.
"I already did."
Derek folded his arms.
"So what's the plan now?"
Ryan's answer came without hesitation.
"If I can't own her..."
He stared at the photograph.
"...I'll ruin her."
That evening my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Instead I answered.
No one spoke.
Then...
A little girl's voice.
"Miss Ava?"
My blood froze.
"Yes?"
"My daddy says you're a bad person."
Silence.
"I don't have a daddy anymore."
The child sniffled.
"He said if I call you, you'll give us money."
The line disconnected.
Claire looked horrified.
"What was that?"
I stared at the phone.
"Ryan."
"He found another way."
"He isn't attacking me anymore."
"He's attacking my reputation."
May you like
And I knew...
That was only the beginning.
