Chapter 8 - The Untangling of the Lie

The next morning at exactly ten o'clock, the atmosphere inside Harrison Vance’s private office was suffocatingly tense.
Ledger Vesper sat across the heavy mahogany desk, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys he had flew in from the city overnight. He looked exhausted, bags dark under his eyes, his usual immaculate hair slightly disheveled. Yet, he still tried to cling to his arrogant smile.
"This is an absolute farce, Harrison," Ledger scoffed, tossing a thin stack of papers onto the desk. "Maren is a grieving, emotionally unstable widow who has been manipulated by a senile old potter. Here are the receipts for the eleven thousand dollars my brother borrowed from me. I demand she pays it immediately or defaults on her property."
Harrison Vance didn't even look at the papers. He leaned back in his leather chair, a look of profound pity on his face.
"Ledger, you really should have checked on your associates this morning before coming here," Harrison said smoothly.
Ledger's smile faltered. "What are you talking about?"
Harrison pressed a button on his desk intercom. The door to the side conference room opened, and Maren walked in. She wasn't wearing her dead husband’s old coat today. She was wearing a beautifully tailored dark suit that Harrison’s wife had lent her. Her posture was straight, her chin held high, her eyes flashing with an unassailable power.
Behind her came two federal agents from the Internal Revenue Service and the State Bank Commission, carrying heavy boxes of certified bank records.
"Ledger Vesper," the lead federal agent stated, placing a formal warrant on the desk directly over Ledger's fake receipts.
"We have spent the last twelve hours reviewing the digital forensic records of the Vesper Estate accounts, cross-referencing them with foreign asset routing numbers provided by a certified ledger etched into corporate evidence. We have found absolute proof of the illegal transfer of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars of corporate funds belonging to Maren Vesper, along with systematic tax evasion spanning three years."
Ledger bounced out of his chair, his face turning an unearthly shade of purple. "This is a lie! You have no tangible proof! You can't use random numbers to accuse me!"

"We have the pottery, Ledger," Maren spoke up, her voice calm, cutting through his panicked shouts like a razor.
"Whit knew you would try to steal from his children. He etched the hidden account paths directly into the clay before he died. Casper kept them safe. And last night, your own hired men confessed to trying to burn that evidence down on your direct orders. It’s over, Ledger. The lie is done."
