Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle Lines

Two days later, Maren found herself sitting in a hidden sunroom at the back of Harrison Vance’s sprawling estate on the edge of town. Harrison was a sharp, silver-haired man in his late sixties, with piercing blue eyes that scanned Whit’s journal and the high-resolution photographs Casper had taken of the pottery inscriptions.

For two hours, the retired lawyer didn't say a word. He simply cross-referenced the numbers on the pottery with the bank statements from the manila envelope.

Finally, Harrison pushed his glasses up his nose and let out a long, low whistle.

"It’s a masterpiece," Harrison said, a fierce smile breaking across his face. "Your husband laid a perfect legal trap, Maren. These etched numbers correspond to a dummy corporation Ledger set up in the Cayman Islands. I still have contacts at the federal banking commission. If we pull these specific threads, Ledger’s entire financial empire will unravel like a cheap sweater."

"Can we take him to court?" Maren asked, her voice trembling with anticipation.

"We can do better than that," Harrison replied, his eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction. "We can spring a trap. If we file a public lawsuit right now, Ledger will use his wealth to delay the trial for years, dragging you through the mud until you run out of energy. No, we need to catch him in an act of undeniable fraud where he cannot wiggle out."

"How do we do that?"

"He claims you owe him eleven thousand dollars, correct? And he uses that alleged debt to threaten your home." Harrison leaned forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany desk. "We are going to invite him to a formal mediation at my office to settle that debt once and for all. We will tell him you have found a benefactor to pay it off. He won't be able to resist coming in person to gloat and sign the release papers."

"And when he signs?"

"When he signs those papers under oath, confirming his financial ledger for the Vesper estate, he will be walking right into a federal trap for grand larceny, embezzlement, and fraud."

But Ledger wasn't a man to be underestimated. That very evening, when Maren returned home, she found her house dark. The refrigerator was silent. She flipped the light switch, but nothing happened.

Ledger had used his influence at the local utility company to cut off her electricity and heating, claiming "administrative non-payment."

Maren sat in the dark, freezing living room, wrapping her crying children in three layers of heavy blankets. She knew exactly what this was: Ledger’s retaliation for her defiance. He was trying to starve her out before she could fight back.
