CHAPTER 7 – The Truth Michael Buried

CHAPTER 7 – The Truth Michael Buried

Amber's face had lost every trace of confidence.

Gone was the polished executive assistant who had mocked me over the phone during labor.

Standing before me in the courthouse hallway was a frightened woman whose hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Michael was still speaking with his attorney at the far end of the corridor.

We had only a minute.

"Catherine," Amber whispered, "I'm sorry."

I stared at her.

"You should have thought about that before answering my husband's phone."

"I know."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I deserve your anger."

"Then why are you here?"

She looked over her shoulder again.

"Because he's going to destroy both of us."

A chill ran through me.

"What are you talking about?"

Amber reached into her handbag and pulled out a small flash drive.

"I found this in Michael's office."

She pressed it into my hand.

"I made copies before he realized it was missing."

"What is it?"

"Everything."

Before I could ask another question, the courtroom doors reopened.

Our recess was over.

Amber leaned closer.

"I never knew you were in labor."

I frowned.

"What?"

"He told me you were visiting your sister."

"He said your marriage had already ended."

I searched her face for deception.

There wasn't any.

Only regret.

"He lied to me, too."

Then she walked away.

That evening, Victoria Reynolds inserted the flash drive into her laptop.

The screen filled with emails.

Hundreds of them.

Bank transfers.

Private messages.

Corporate files.

The room became completely silent.

Rachel slowly covered her mouth.

"Oh... my God."

Victoria clicked another folder.

There were signed invoices from shell companies.

Personal expenses hidden as business costs.

Luxury vacations billed to shareholders.

Payments to private investigators.

Then...

One document caught my attention.

The title read:

Family Strategy – Confidential

Victoria opened it.

Every line made my blood run colder.

Michael had spent nearly a year preparing to divorce me.

He had hired investigators to follow me.

Collected harmless photographs and ordinary conversations, hoping to twist them into evidence of neglect.

He had even written a list of possible custody arguments.

One sentence nearly stopped my heart.

"Once the child is born, claim postpartum emotional instability. Courts usually favor cautious custody decisions."

Rachel slammed her fist onto the table.

"He planned this before your daughter even existed."

Victoria looked at me quietly.

"No."

"He planned it while she was still growing inside you."

I couldn't breathe.

Every doctor's appointment.

Every nursery we painted together.

Every promise he'd made to our unborn daughter...

He had already been planning to take her away.

The betrayal was deeper than infidelity.

It was calculated.

Cold.

Deliberate.

Victoria closed the laptop.

"We're no longer defending ourselves."

"What do you mean?"

She smiled for the first time.

"Now we're proving fraud."

Three days later, federal investigators arrived at Harrison Technologies.

Employees watched in stunned silence as agents carried boxes of financial records from the building.

Television helicopters circled overhead.

The company's stock dropped another twenty percent before noon.

Michael called me sixteen times.

I answered the seventeenth.

"What have you done?"

His voice sounded nothing like the confident businessman I had married.

"What have I done?"

"You turned Amber against me."

"No."

"You did that yourself."

"Catherine, listen to me."

"I've listened for eleven years."

"This has gone too far."

"It went too far the night you abandoned your wife."

His breathing became frantic.

"You don't understand what's happening."

"I understand perfectly."

"You'll lose everything."

I looked down at my daughter sleeping peacefully in her crib.

"No."

"I already lost the only thing that mattered."

"You."

"And somehow..."

"I survived."

I ended the call forever.

The final custody hearing lasted less than two hours.

Michael entered looking exhausted.

His expensive confidence had disappeared.

Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.

Reporters filled every available seat.

Judge Eleanor Whitman reviewed every document carefully.

Hospital records.

Financial evidence.

Witness statements.

Security footage.

Corporate emails.

Finally, she removed her glasses.

"In thirty-two years on this bench," she said quietly, "I have rarely encountered a parent whose actions demonstrated such deliberate disregard for the welfare of both spouse and child."

The courtroom became perfectly still.

She looked directly at Michael.

"You abandoned your wife during a medical emergency."

"You attempted to discredit her mental health for strategic advantage."

"You sought custody not out of parental devotion but out of control."

Then she turned toward me.

"Mrs. Harrison..."

"You have shown extraordinary resilience under circumstances no mother should ever experience."

My eyes filled with tears.

The judge signed the order.

"Primary physical and legal custody is awarded to Catherine Harrison."

Michael lowered his head.

He didn't argue.

May you like

He couldn't.

The evidence had spoken louder than money ever could.
