CHAPTER 5 – The Evidence They Never Knew Existed

CHAPTER 5 – The Evidence They Never Knew Existed
The divorce papers arrived the following Monday.
Not delivered by Michael.
Not even by his attorney.
A courier left the thick envelope on my front porch as though eleven years of marriage could be reduced to a signature and a tracking number.
Rachel picked it up before I could.
"Want me to burn it?"
I managed a tired smile.
"Not yet."
Inside were dozens of pages.
Requests.
Demands.
Financial disclosures.
And then...
One sentence stopped my heart.
Petitioner requests primary physical and legal custody of the minor child due to concerns regarding Respondent's emotional stability following childbirth.
I read it again.
Then a third time.
My hands trembled.
"They're trying to paint me as mentally unstable."
Rachel's face darkened.
"They planned this."
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Normally I would have ignored it.
Instead, I answered.
"Catherine?"
It was Dr. Daniel Brooks.
"I hope I'm not calling at a bad time."
His voice remained calm, but something about it felt unusually serious.
"No. Is everything okay?"
"I need to speak with you."
My stomach tightened.
"About the baby?"
"No."
A pause.
"About the night she was born."
An hour later, Rachel insisted on coming with me.
Daniel met us at a quiet café across from the hospital.
He looked exhausted.
As though he hadn't slept.
He placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"I debated whether to do this."
I frowned.
"What is it?"
"The hospital's internal incident report."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Incident report?"
Daniel nodded.
"The nursing staff documented everything that happened that night."
He looked directly at me.
"Every unanswered phone call."
"Every time you asked for your husband."
"The speakerphone conversation with Amber Collins."
"The emotional distress you experienced."
My eyes widened.
"They wrote all of that down?"
"Every minute."
He slid another document across the table.
"And this..."
...was the delivery log.
Time of admission.
Time of labor.
Time of birth.
Every detail had been recorded.
"You'll need these."
I looked at him in confusion.
"Why?"
His expression hardened.
"Because Michael's legal team contacted the hospital yesterday."
Rachel's coffee cup nearly slipped from her hand.
"What?"
"They requested copies of your psychiatric evaluation."
"I never had one."
"I know."
"They also asked whether anyone observed signs of postpartum emotional instability."
Silence filled the table.
Daniel continued quietly.
"I refused to answer without proper authorization."
My chest tightened.
"They're building a custody case."
"Yes."
"They're trying to use the worst night of my life against me."
Daniel slowly nodded.
"I'm afraid so."
Tears threatened to spill over.
"I don't understand."
"I never lied."
"I never cheated."
"I never abandoned my child."
"So why am I the one defending myself?"
Daniel answered with painful honesty.
"Because people like Michael often believe money can rewrite the truth."
Rachel reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
"Then we'll make sure the truth speaks louder."
That afternoon, I met with divorce attorney Victoria Reynolds.
She listened without interrupting.
Read every document.
Studied every timeline.
Then she leaned back in her chair.
"They've made one enormous mistake."
"What?"
"They underestimated you."
I frowned.
"They think this case is about infidelity."
"It isn't."
Victoria tapped the hospital records.
"This case is about abandonment."
She circled the timestamp.
"Your husband was unavailable during an obstetric emergency."
She circled another.
"His mistress answered his phone."
Another.
"He attempted to silence you with money."
Another.
"He filed for custody before visiting his newborn."
She closed the file.
"If even half of this is proven..."
"...the judge won't be impressed."
For the first time in weeks...
Hope appeared.
Small.
Fragile.
But real.
That evening, another surprise arrived.
Not flowers.
Not legal papers.
A small package.
No return address.
Inside was a silver baby bracelet engraved with one word.
Hope.
There was also a handwritten note.
"Never let anyone convince your daughter that she was born into tragedy. She was born into truth."
Again...
Only the initials.
D.B.
I smiled despite myself.
Rachel noticed.
"You like him."
"I barely know him."
"You smile every time his name comes up."
I looked away.
"I just appreciate kindness."
Rachel laughed.
"That's exactly how every love story begins."
I shook my head.
"My marriage just ended."
"I'm not looking for another relationship."
But deep inside...
I couldn't stop thinking about the man who had stood beside me when my husband chose not to.
Three days later...
Everything exploded.
Because someone leaked security footage from the Riverside Grand Hotel.
The video showed Michael and Amber entering the presidential suite...
At 9:14 p.m.
The night I went into labor.
They didn't leave until nearly six in the morning.
News stations replayed the footage nonstop.
Social media erupted again.
Shareholders demanded explanations.
Employees began resigning.
By sunset...
