CHAPTER 3: THE SON WHO DIDN'T KNOW

CHAPTER 3: THE SON WHO DIDN'T KNOW
At 5:41 p.m., Michael came home.
He walked through the front door carrying his tool bag and immediately sensed something was wrong.
The living room looked like a battlefield after the smoke cleared.
His wife was crying.
Her friends were gone.
The black trash bag sat by the front door.
And I was calmly drinking coffee.
"Mom?"
Sabrina rushed to him.
"Your mother humiliated me!"
Michael looked confused.
"What happened?"
For twenty minutes Sabrina talked.
She left out the laundry.
Left out the insults.
Left out every detail that mattered.
When she finished, Michael turned toward me.
"Mom?"
I stood up.
Opened my phone.
And pressed play.
The entire conversation had been recorded.
Every word.
Every laugh.
Every insult.
"Wash this fast."
"That's what we give you a free roof for."
The room became deadly quiet.
Michael stared at the screen.
Then at Sabrina.
Then back at the screen.
His face slowly lost color.
"You said that?"
Sabrina opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Michael sat down heavily.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Heartbroken.
Because suddenly he could see what had been happening while he spent twelve-hour shifts trying to provide for everyone.
Every little insult.
Every act of disrespect.
Every line his mother never told him about.
Then I handed him the property deed.
He stared at it.
"Mom..."
"I never wanted you to choose," I said softly.
"But I won't be treated like hired help in my own home."
Michael lowered his head.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Then Sabrina made the worst mistake of her life.
She pointed at me and shouted:
"If she doesn't like it, she can leave!"
The room froze.
May you like
Even she realized what she had said the second it left her mouth.
Because she had forgotten whose name was on the deed.
