CHAPTER 2: THE TRASH BAG

CHAPTER 2: THE TRASH BAG

The black garbage bag snapped open with a loud crack.

For the first time all afternoon, Sabrina stood up.

"Gloria, what are you doing?"

I didn't answer.

I dropped the first armful of laundry into the bag.

Then the second.

Then the third.

One of her silk blouses disappeared into the black plastic.

A pair of designer leggings followed.

The room had gone completely silent.

The garbage truck outside growled closer.

Sabrina's face changed.

"Stop."

I tied the bag shut.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The same way I had spent two years swallowing my pride.

"You wanted these washed," I said calmly.

"Now they're ready for pickup."

One of her friends actually choked on her coffee.

Another stood up.

"Sabrina... maybe we should go."

"No."

Sabrina stepped forward.

"You're not throwing away my clothes."

I looked directly into her eyes.

Then I said the first sentence that truly belonged to me in years.

"Then get them out of my house."

The words landed like a gunshot.

My house.

Not Michael's.

Not Sabrina's.

Mine.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Sabrina laughed.

A nervous laugh.

"Your house?"

She looked at her friends.

"She's being dramatic again."

I walked to the hallway cabinet.

Opened the drawer.

Pulled out a thick manila envelope.

And placed it on the coffee table.

Inside were property tax records.

Insurance documents.

The original deed.

Every page carried one name.

GLORIA BENNETT.

Not Michael Bennett.

Not Sabrina Bennett.

Mine.

May you like

The laughter died immediately.

And for the first time, Sabrina looked afraid.
