CHAPTER 8 – THE CAMERAS COME DOWN

CHAPTER 8 – THE CAMERAS COME DOWN
Three months later...
Marchetti Tower was quieter than it had ever been.
The emergency lockdowns were gone.
The armed patrols had been reduced.
For the first time in years...
Dante slept through an entire night.
Emma found him standing inside the surveillance room.
The same room she had accidentally entered months earlier.
Dozens of monitors still covered the walls.
She smiled.
"So..."
"You still spying on your employees?"
Dante looked around the room.
"I've been thinking."
He pressed a single button.
One by one...
The screens went black.
Another button.
Hard drives erased themselves.
Another.
The cameras shut down forever.
Emma watched in silence.
"You trusted no one."
"I didn't."
"What changed?"
He looked directly at her.
"The woman who watered fake orchids."
She laughed.
"I'll never live that down, will I?"
"Never."
He reached into a drawer.
Inside lay the very first yellow sticky note she had left in the apartment.
You're almost out of coffee filters.
"I kept it."
Emma blinked in surprise.
"You kept... that?"
"It reminded me..."
He folded the note carefully.
"...that kindness still existed."
She wrapped her arms around him.
For the first time in a very long time...
Dante Marchetti hugged someone back without fear.
EPILOGUE – THE ONE THING HE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO FEEL
One year later...
The penthouse looked different.
The hidden cameras were gone.
The locked doors were gone.
The atmosphere of suspicion had disappeared.
Real orchids bloomed beside the eastern windows.
Emma smiled every time she watered them.
One sunny morning, she discovered Dante standing in the kitchen.
Attempting to make coffee.
The machine beeped angrily.
She laughed.
"You run half the city..."
"But you still can't operate a coffee maker."
"I was waiting for the expert."
She walked over and pressed one button.
"There."
"Fixed."
He handed her a small velvet box.
Emma stared.
"Dante..."
He took a slow breath.
"The first time I watched you on those cameras..."
"I was looking for betrayal."
"I found compassion."
"I was looking for a spy."
"I found courage."
"I thought caring made people weak."
"I was wrong."
He opened the box.
Inside rested a simple diamond ring.
"No hidden cameras."
"No bodyguards."
"No deals."
"No conditions."
"Just one question."
Emma smiled through tears.
"Yes."
Before he could even finish asking.
Outside, Manhattan carried on with its endless rhythm.
Inside, the man once feared as the coldest boss in New York finally understood the truth.
Power had built his empire.
Fear had protected it.
But love...
Love had saved the only part of him worth saving.
As sunlight poured through the windows, Emma gently picked up the watering can and smiled at the orchids.
"They're real this time."
Dante laughed.
"I checked."

Together they looked out across the city—not as a mafia boss and a maid, but as two people who had chosen each other despite the darkness that had tried to pull them apart.
