CHAPTER 7 – THE CHOICE THAT ENDED A WAR

CHAPTER 7 – THE CHOICE THAT ENDED A WAR
The video stopped.
No one in the room spoke.
Sergei Volkov's smile lingered on the frozen screen like a threat.
Emma replayed the final seconds.
Her mother walked safely out of the hospital.
She looked confused, but unharmed.
Across the street, Sergei stood perfectly still, his eyes fixed on the camera.
Not on Emma.
On Dante.
A message without words.
I can reach anyone you love.
Dante slowly placed the tablet on the table.
"Luca."
"Already moving."
"I want every camera within five blocks of that hospital."
"Yes, Boss."
"Every vehicle."
"Already flagged."
"Every person who made eye contact with Sergei."
Luca gave a faint smile.
"I knew you'd ask."
He disappeared.
Emma looked at Dante.
"My mother..."
"She's safe."
"For now."
The honesty hurt.
Emma turned toward the window.
"I'm tired."
"Tired?"
She nodded.
"Everywhere I go..."
"Someone dies."
"My mother is hunted."
"Your men are hunted."
"You nearly died twice."
She wiped away a tear.
"What if I just surrendered?"
Dante's expression hardened instantly.
"No."
"You didn't even think."
"Because the answer will always be no."
"What if giving myself up ends this?"
"It won't."
"How do you know?"
Dante stepped closer.
"Because I know Sergei."
"He doesn't want peace."
"He wants control."
"And if you go to him..."
His voice became almost painfully gentle.
"...you'll never be free again."
Emma searched his face.
"Then what do we do?"
For the first time in days...
Dante smiled.
"We end it."
The following evening...
An encrypted message reached every major crime family in New York.
Meeting. Midnight. Marchetti Harbor.
No negotiations.
No conditions.
Just one sentence.
Come watch the last chapter.
Sergei arrived exactly at midnight.
His convoy stopped inside the abandoned shipping terminal.
Dozens of armed men stepped into position.
Across the dock...
Dante waited.
Only Luca stood beside him.
Emma emerged from a nearby warehouse.
Sergei smiled.
"My granddaughter."
Emma didn't move.
"I'm not here because you summoned me."
"No?"
"I'm here because this ends tonight."
The old man's smile faded.
"You belong with your blood."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"I belong with the people who loved me before they knew who I was."
Sergei's eyes shifted toward Dante.
"You've poisoned her."
Dante answered calmly.
"I never told her who to become."
"I simply gave her the chance to choose."
Silence settled across the harbor.
Then Sergei slowly raised his hand.
Every rifle pointed toward Dante.
Luca's men did the same.
One nervous finger.
One mistake.
Hundreds would die.
Emma suddenly stepped between both armies.
"No."
Everyone froze.
"If anyone fires..."
She looked first at Sergei.
"...you lose your granddaughter forever."
Then she turned toward Dante.
"And you'll become exactly the monster he says you are."
The wind swept across the harbor.
For several endless seconds...
Neither man moved.
Finally...
Sergei lowered his hand.
"So that's your answer."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
The old man looked at Dante one final time.
"You won."
Dante replied quietly.
"No."
"She did."
Without another word...
Sergei turned and walked back to his car.
One by one...
His soldiers lowered their weapons.
May you like
The war ended...
without a single shot.
