CHAPTER 4 – The Mistress Walks In

CHAPTER 4 – The Mistress Walks In

Before anyone could speak again, hurried footsteps echoed outside the boardroom.

The doors burst open.

A sharply dressed woman entered, visibly annoyed.

"There you are, Ethan."

She stopped mid-sentence.

The entire Board was staring at her.

Daniel frowned.

"And you are?"

The woman straightened confidently.

"Vanessa Collins. Senior Marketing Manager."

She looked at Ethan.

"You ignored every one of my calls."

Then she noticed Madison.

Recognition flashed across her face.

"Oh..."

Her confidence faltered.

"You..."

Madison regarded her quietly.

"Good morning."

Vanessa forced a smile.

"I didn't realize there was a meeting."

"There wasn't."

Daniel corrected.

"There is now."

The General Counsel slid another folder across the table.

"Ms. Collins."

She hesitated.

"Yes?"

"We've recovered over eight hundred internal messages exchanged between you and Mr. Carter."

Her face turned pale.

"They're personal."

"They became corporate records the moment company resources were used."

Another screen illuminated.

Hotel reservations.

Corporate travel.

Private dinners billed as client entertainment.

Luxury gifts.

Vacation photos.

Each one paid using company funds.

Vanessa looked at Ethan in disbelief.

"You told me everything was approved."

Ethan snapped.

"Be quiet."

She stared at him.

"You said your wife would never find out."

Every director looked toward Madison.

She didn't react.

Not outwardly.

Inside, years of unanswered questions quietly assembled into the truth.

The late nights.

The unexplained trips.

The forgotten anniversaries.

None of it had been work.

Daniel spoke again.

"There's another issue."

The lights changed.

A security recording appeared.

It showed Ethan entering the records department after business hours three months earlier.

"What is this?" Ethan demanded.

The Head of Security answered.

"The night someone attempted to alter executive approval records."

The video zoomed in.

Ethan removing a file.

Replacing several signed pages.

Trying to conceal the original authorization history.

Daniel looked directly at him.

"You weren't just hiding expenses."

"You were attempting to erase the Chairwoman's oversight."

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

"I..."

His lawyer, seated quietly in the corner, finally whispered,

"Don't answer another question."

At that exact moment, another visitor arrived downstairs.

Margaret.

She pushed past security despite repeated warnings.

"My son is innocent!"

Her voice echoed through the lobby.

Employees gathered.

Phones quietly appeared.

Someone started recording.

She pointed toward the elevators.

"My daughter-in-law ruined my son's life because she's jealous!"

The elevator doors opened.

Madison stepped out slowly, supported by her cane.

Every employee instinctively moved aside.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"So this is your revenge?"

Madison looked at her with surprising sadness.

"No."

"This is accountability."

Margaret scoffed.

"You owe this family everything."

Madison answered softly,

"I gave your family everything."

"My time."

"My love."

"My money."

"My dignity."

"And when I lay in a hospital bed with a shattered leg..."

She looked directly into Margaret's eyes.

"...you complained that your lunch was late."

The crowded lobby became completely silent.

Not one employee looked away.

Upstairs, Daniel received an urgent message.

He immediately approached Madison.

"The forensic accountants found additional transfers."

"How much?"

"Not thousands."

"Not hundreds of thousands."

He swallowed.

"Several million dollars."

Madison's expression finally changed.

"For what?"

Daniel handed her the report.

The destination account carried a familiar name.

Carter Family Holdings.

An account she had never known existed.

She slowly lifted her eyes toward Ethan.

For the first time that day...

There was unmistakable disappointment in them.

"You didn't just betray your wife."

She held up the report.

"You tried to steal from the company that trusted you."

Ethan opened his mouth to defend himself.

Before he could say a single word—

Federal agents walked through the front entrance.

One of them held a warrant.

"Mr. Ethan Carter?"

"Yes..."

"You are hereby ordered to remain on the premises pending investigation into allegations of corporate fraud, financial misconduct, and evidence tampering."

The handcuffs had not come out.

Not yet.

But everyone in the building understood one thing.

May you like

By the end of the day...

They probably would.
