CHAPTER 2 – The Audit That Stopped the Entire Building

CHAPTER 2 – The Audit That Stopped the Entire Building

The elevator doors slid open at exactly 8:01 the next morning.

Employees at Core Dynamics barely looked up—until six people in dark suits stepped into the lobby carrying sealed briefcases and official identification.

"Corporate Compliance."

"Internal Audit Division."

"No one leaves the building until we're finished."

The cheerful chatter vanished.

Receptionists exchanged nervous glances. Department managers hurried back to their offices. Within minutes, whispers spread through every floor.

Someone important was about to fall.

Ethan Carter walked in twelve minutes later with his usual confidence.

Tailored navy suit.

Designer watch.

Coffee in one hand.

Phone in the other.

He smiled at the receptionist.

"Morning, Lisa."

She didn't answer.

Instead, she quietly pointed toward the conference room.

A man Ethan had never seen before stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter?"

"Yes?"

"I'm Daniel Brooks, Corporate Compliance."

Ethan frowned.

"I wasn't informed about any inspection."

"You weren't supposed to be."

Brooks handed him a sealed envelope.

"By order of the Board of Directors, you're under immediate administrative review. Please surrender your company laptop, phone, building access card, and all financial records connected to your division."

Ethan blinked.

"What?"

"This is standard procedure."

"There has to be some mistake."

"There isn't."

Inside the conference room, accountants were already opening years of expense reports.

Travel reimbursements.

Vendor contracts.

Executive entertainment expenses.

Company credit card statements.

One auditor quietly compared signatures.

Another examined encrypted email archives.

A third requested security footage from the previous eighteen months.

Ethan laughed nervously.

"You people are wasting your time."

Daniel looked up.

"We'll decide that."

Across the city, Madison adjusted herself carefully against the hospital bed.

Her leg throbbed relentlessly.

Every movement felt like fire.

But her attention remained fixed on the encrypted laptop Chloe had placed across her blanket.

"Ready?" Chloe asked.

Madison nodded.

"Open the shareholder dashboard."

Several confidential windows appeared.

Ownership structures.

Private trusts.

Voting rights.

Executive compensation.

There it was.

Core Dynamics Holdings.

Indirect controlling interest:

Hawthorne Capital Partners.

Managing Trustee:

Madison Avery.

The same woman Ethan believed spent her mornings decorating cupcakes.

Chloe smiled.

"He never once wondered where your investment income came from."

Madison gave a tired laugh.

"He never asked."

At 9:34 a.m., Ethan's confidence began to crack.

One auditor placed a folder in front of him.

"We found something."

"What now?"

"Your expense account."

"So?"

"You billed the company for luxury dinners."

"They were client meetings."

"Were they?"

Brooks pressed a button.

Large photographs appeared on the conference room screen.

Restaurant receipts.

Champagne.

Jewelry purchases.

Spa weekends.

Weekend hotel suites.

The listed client?

There wasn't one.

Instead...

Every receipt matched weekends Ethan claimed he had been "working overtime."

His face drained of color.

"Those..."

"...are personal expenses," Brooks finished.

Then came the second folder.

"This concerns your promotion two years ago."

Ethan relaxed slightly.

"I earned that promotion."

Brooks nodded.

"You certainly believed you did."

He opened another document.

Recommendation letters.

Performance reviews.

Board approval notes.

One page carried a single handwritten instruction.

Approved personally by M.A.

Ethan frowned.

"Who's M.A.?"

No one answered.

Meanwhile...

Margaret sat comfortably in Ethan's living room eating takeout Chinese food.

The same woman who had claimed she was "starving."

She shook her head dramatically.

"That girl has always been selfish."

Her phone rang.

It was Ethan.

She answered cheerfully.

"Did your wife apologize yet?"

His voice was barely recognizable.

"Mom..."

"What?"

"They're auditing everything."

"So?"

"They froze my office."

"..."

"They took my laptop."

Silence.

"They're asking about money."

Margaret finally frowned.

"What money?"

"I don't know."

For the first time in years...

Fear entered both of their voices.

Back at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Madison's attorney arrived carrying a thick leather portfolio.

"Good morning."

He placed several documents on her tray.

"Divorce petition."

"Asset protection order."

"Temporary financial injunction."

"And..."

He smiled slightly.

"...the forensic accounting team is already tracing every marital expenditure."

Madison signed each page carefully.

One signature after another.

Each stroke of the pen felt lighter than the last.

Years of manipulation...

Ending in black ink.

At exactly 11:17 a.m., Daniel Brooks received a secure phone call.

"Yes?"

A calm female voice spoke.

"How is Mr. Carter handling the audit?"

Brooks glanced through the conference room window.

Ethan was sweating through his expensive shirt.

"He still believes this is about expense reports."

Madison looked toward the Chicago skyline outside her hospital window.

"It isn't."

"No."

"It's about whether he deserves to stay inside the company at all."

Brooks hesitated.

"The Board wants permission to disclose your ownership."

"Not yet."

"You want him to keep guessing?"

"I want him to understand something first."

"What?"

Madison's voice became almost emotionless.

"I spent years watching him underestimate everyone who loved him."

She closed her laptop.

"Today..."

"...he gets to experience what it feels like to underestimate the wrong person."

At 1:42 that afternoon, the auditors entered Ethan's office carrying one final sealed envelope.

Daniel placed it on the desk.

"Mr. Carter..."

Ethan looked up hopefully.

"Is this over?"

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

He slid the envelope across the polished wood.

"This is your notice to appear before the Board of Directors tomorrow morning."

Ethan tore it open.

His heartbeat stopped.

At the bottom of the page was a single sentence.

The Chairwoman has requested your personal attendance.

He whispered under his breath...

"Chairwoman?"

No one at Core Dynamics had ever met her.

No employee knew her face.

Some believed she didn't even exist.

Across the city, Madison slowly closed her eyes.

Tomorrow...

Her husband would finally walk into a boardroom expecting to defend his career.

May you like

Instead...

He would come face-to-face with the woman who had built the empire beneath his feet.
