CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Never Died

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Never Died

The laboratory lights suddenly went dark.

Backup generators activated.

Only the emergency lights remained.

Marcus checked the security cameras.

"They're inside the building."

Charles turned to me.

"We have to leave."

"Where?"

"Somewhere even they don't know exists."

As we headed toward another hidden exit, one monitor flickered again.

Instead of the phoenix symbol...

A face appeared.

A woman.

Brown hair.

Gentle eyes.

A scar above her left eyebrow.

I gasped.

It was Evelyn.

Alive.

Not an old recording.

Live.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Charles..."

His entire body froze.

Impossible.

He slowly stepped toward the screen.

"Evelyn?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I don't have much time."

Marcus whispered,

"My God..."

Charles reached toward the monitor as if he could touch her.

"They told me you died."

"They wanted you to believe that."

My heart pounded.

She was alive.

For three years.

Hidden.

Evelyn spoke quickly.

"The board is only one layer."

Behind her stood shelves filled with research equipment.

She wasn't imprisoned.

She was working.

"I escaped because I copied the complete Aurora database."

She held up a silver drive.

"This is the only original."

Charles whispered,

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"They're listening."

Static interrupted the signal.

Evelyn continued.

"If they find me..."

"They'll finish what they started."

She looked toward me.

"You must be Emily."

I nodded, speechless.

"Thank you for protecting Ethan."

Confusion washed over me.

"You know my son?"

She smiled sadly.

"I know every child they experimented on."

The transmission glitched.

A warning alarm sounded somewhere behind Evelyn.

She looked over her shoulder.

"They're here."

Charles shouted,

"Evelyn!"

She ignored him.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

"Emily..."

"There is something Charles still doesn't know."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

She took a shaky breath.

"The reason they want Ethan alive..."

"...is because his genetic profile matches someone else's."

Charles frowned.

"Whose?"

Evelyn answered with four words that shattered every assumption we had made.

"Charles is his father."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

I couldn't breathe.

Charles looked as if the world had stopped turning.

"No."

His voice barely existed.

"That's impossible."

Evelyn shook her head.

"They used frozen donor material from Project Aurora without consent."

"They created pregnancies they could monitor."

I clutched Ethan against my chest.

Every memory of my fertility treatment four years earlier came crashing back.

The anonymous donor.

The clinic that suddenly closed.

The missing paperwork.

The bankruptcy.

It wasn't random.

None of it had been.

Ethan hadn't been chosen after he was born.

He had been designed before he existed.

Before Charles could process the revelation, the laboratory walls shook violently.

A hidden explosive detonated somewhere above us.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

Marcus looked at the security monitor and his face turned white.

"They found the bunker."

The reinforced steel door began to bend inward.

A mechanical cutting torch burned through the lock.

Orange sparks filled the room.

The distorted voice returned over the speakers.

"You've run out of places to hide."

Charles stood in front of me and Ethan.

He slowly raised his pistol.

Then, for the first time, he looked down at the sleeping baby in my arms—not as a child he had rescued...

...but as the son he had never known existed.

Outside the bunker door, the cutting torch suddenly stopped.

A heavy voice echoed through the corridor.

"Open the door, Mr. Walker."

There was a long pause.

Then the stranger added one sentence that made everyone in the room freeze.

"I'm not here to kill your family. I'm here to save it."
