CHAPTER 3 — The Ghost in the Ledger

CHAPTER 3 — The Ghost in the Ledger
I couldn't speak.
The words murdered my wife echoed through my mind while Ethan slept peacefully in the examination room, unaware that his tiny heartbeat had suddenly become the center of a war worth billions of dollars.
Charles stood by the window with his back to me.
"I told the police it wasn't an accident."
His voice was calm.
"They called it grief."
"What happened?"
"My wife, Evelyn, was leading an internal audit."
He turned slowly.
"Three days before she planned to present her findings to the board, her car went over a bridge."
"They said brake failure?"
"They said mechanical failure."
His eyes hardened.
"I paid for three independent investigations."
"And?"
"They all disappeared."
The room fell silent.
Not because I doubted him.
Because I recognized the pattern.
Evidence erased.
Money redirected.
People silenced.
Someone wasn't stealing from Biotech Solutions.
Someone owned enough power to rewrite the truth.
Charles handed me a thick folder.
"I wasn't looking for an employee when you texted me."
"I know."
"I was looking for someone who didn't belong to anyone inside this building."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The executives here have worked together for years."
He tapped the folder.
"If one of them is dirty, the others know."
"You needed an outsider."
"You needed to accidentally text the wrong person."
He gave the faintest smile.
"I needed someone honest enough to send a message asking for fifty dollars instead of inventing a bigger lie."
His words caught me off guard.
"You trusted me because I was broke?"
"I trusted you because desperate people usually ask for survival."
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Greedy people ask for opportunity."
The folder contained everything.
Internal audit reports.
Anonymous complaints.
Security logs.
Every document ended the same way.
Investigation Closed.
One name appeared over and over again.
Richard Hale.
Chief Financial Officer.
Twenty-two years with the company.
Respected by investors.
Loved by the media.
Chairman of three charities.
The perfect executive.
Or the perfect criminal.
Back in the accounting department, I continued examining payment records.
Richard's approvals appeared everywhere.
Too often.
Almost intentionally.
A smart thief hides.
Richard looked like someone leaving footprints on purpose.
That bothered me.
Experienced criminals don't advertise themselves.
Unless...
Someone wanted us to suspect him.
I leaned closer to the monitor.
The timestamps.
Every fraudulent approval happened between 2:00 and 2:07 a.m.
Exactly seven minutes.
Always seven.
Nobody worked seven-minute shifts in the middle of the night.
The approvals were automated.
Which meant...
Someone possessed executive encryption keys.
Far above accounting.
Far above finance.
Someone with unrestricted access.
My phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Stop looking at Hale.
Another message followed immediately.
You're chasing the wrong wolf.
Before I could react, someone spoke behind me.
"Interesting files?"
I nearly jumped.
Richard Hale himself stood beside my desk.
Silver-haired.
Perfect smile.
Expensive navy suit.
The kind grandfather image that magazines adored.
He looked nothing like a man capable of murder.
"I didn't realize Mr. Walker had hired new analysts."
"I started today."
"So I've heard."
His smile never reached his eyes.
"You have a beautiful son."
My blood froze.
He shouldn't know that.
I had never mentioned Ethan.
Neither had Charles.
Richard noticed my expression.
"The nursery staff adore him."
He chuckled softly.
"News travels fast."
Maybe.
Or maybe someone had already been watching us.
That evening Charles insisted on driving Ethan and me home.
Two black SUVs followed behind us.
"Security?"
"They were supposed to be discreet."
Halfway across the city, the lead vehicle suddenly accelerated.
Charlie's phone rang.
One word appeared on the screen.
Security.
He answered.
"What is it?"
The driver's voice came through the speaker.
"We're being followed."
Charles checked the rearview mirror.
A black motorcycle.
No license plate.
Then another.
And another.
Three riders.
Keeping perfect distance.
Not trying to pass.
Just watching.
The convoy turned unexpectedly toward an underground parking garage beneath one of Charles's private buildings.
The motorcycles didn't hesitate.
They followed.
The garage doors slammed shut behind us.
For one terrifying second...
Everything went dark.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
A deafening crash echoed through the concrete structure.
One of the escort SUVs exploded into flames.
The blast threw me against the seat while Ethan began screaming in his car seat.
Smoke filled the garage.
Charles shoved open my door.
"Take Ethan!"
"What about you?"
"They're here for me."
Gunfire erupted from somewhere inside the smoke.
Security officers returned fire.
Charles pulled a pistol from a locked compartment beneath the dashboard.
"You know how to run?"
I stared at him.
He smiled without humor.
"Good."
May you like
He grabbed my wrist.
"Then don't stop."
