CHAPTER 4 — THE NURSE WHO COULDN'T STAY SILENT

CHAPTER 4 — THE NURSE WHO COULDN'T STAY SILENT
The young nurse introduced herself.
"My name is Emily Carson."
"I worked the night shift in Labor and Delivery."
She looked terrified.
Not of us.
Of Daniel.
"I've been carrying this for weeks."
Her voice shook.
"I couldn't anymore."
The detective guided her to the front of the chapel.
Daniel's attorney immediately objected.
"My client will not participate in—"
"This isn't for your client."
Emily interrupted him.
"This is for Maya."
The chapel became still again.
Emily took a deep breath.
"The night Maya arrived..."
"She wasn't unconscious."
"Not at first."
I felt my pulse race.
"What did she say?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"I'll never forget it."
"Please..."
"Don't let my husband sign anything."
My mother burst into tears.
Emily continued.
"She kept repeating it."
"'Don't leave Daniel alone with me.'"
Daniel slammed a fist against a pew.
"She's lying!"
Emily flinched.
Then something inside her hardened.
"No."
"You are."
She reached into her bag.
"I kept this because something felt wrong."
Inside was a folded incident report.
Unsigned.
Never submitted.
"I wrote it after my shift."
Detective Hale carefully unfolded it.
The report described an argument.
Time:
3:54 a.m.
Location:
Outside Operating Room Two.
Participants:
Daniel Voss.
An unidentified woman.
Emily looked toward Celeste.
"It was her."
Celeste whispered,
"No..."
"I saw you."
Emily nodded.
"You weren't supposed to be in the maternity ward."
"You were arguing."
Daniel's face turned gray.
Emily repeated the words she'd heard.
Daniel had shouted—
"You promised she'd never wake up!"
The chapel exploded into chaos.
"No!"
Daniel yelled.
"That's not what I meant!"
"What did you mean then?"
I asked.
He couldn't answer.
Because there wasn't an innocent explanation.
Detective Hale's phone buzzed.
He looked down.
Then back up.
His expression changed completely.
"We've received the search team report."
He answered the call.
Listened.
Said nothing.
Finally...
"What?"
The room waited.
Hale slowly lowered the phone.
"The search warrant at Daniel's lake house just came back."
He looked directly at Daniel.
"We found the missing home security server."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
It was enough.
Hale continued.
"The surveillance footage wasn't deleted."
"It was hidden."
My heart pounded.
"What does it show?"
The detective answered quietly.
"It shows exactly who entered Maya's house..."
"...three hours before she died."
Daniel whispered one word.
"No..."
Detective Hale met his eyes.
"We're watching it now."
The chapel doors suddenly opened again.
Another detective hurried inside carrying a laptop.
He didn't say hello.
He simply looked at Hale.
"You need to see this."
Hale watched the first few seconds.
Then his expression turned to horror.
He slowly rotated the laptop toward me.
I looked.
My blood froze.
The camera clearly showed Daniel entering the nursery at 2:08 a.m.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing directly behind him...
Was someone none of us expected.
Someone everyone believed had been over a thousand miles away that night.
Someone whose face made even Daniel recoil in terror.
And the moment the screen revealed that familiar smile...
May you like
I realized Maya's murder had never been the work of just two people.
It had been a conspiracy.
