CHAPTER 3 — THE AUTOPSY'S SECRET

CHAPTER 3 — THE AUTOPSY'S SECRET

No one moved.

The chapel seemed to shrink as every eye followed the thick laboratory envelope in my hands.

Daniel's confidence was gone.

Celeste's fingers tightened around her purse until her knuckles turned white.

One of the detectives stepped beside me.

"Lena," he said quietly, "you don't have to do this here."

"I do."

Because Maya had spent months being told she was emotional.

Paranoid.

Overreacting.

Today, she would finally be believed.

I broke the seal.

The rustle of paper echoed through the silent chapel.

Daniel suddenly laughed.

"A DNA report? Really?"

"You think that proves I killed my wife?"

"No."

"It proves you lied again."

I lifted the first page.

"The autopsy confirms Maya did not die from spontaneous placental abruption."

Several mourners frowned.

That had been the official explanation from the hospital.

Complications.

Bad luck.

Nature.

"But the second examination found something the first one missed."

Daniel's breathing slowed.

Almost too carefully.

He was preparing himself.

"The forensic toxicologist identified traces of oxytocin."

The room fell silent.

The detective beside me continued.

"Not naturally occurring levels."

"Injected."

Gasps swept through the chapel.

My mother nearly collapsed into a pew.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

I held up another report.

"Someone administered enough synthetic oxytocin to trigger violent contractions."

"The contractions caused massive internal bleeding."

"Maya went into labor hours too early."

"The baby lost oxygen."

Neither survived.

The minister lowered his head.

Someone in the back began crying.

Daniel pointed toward me.

"This is ridiculous."

"Doctors use oxytocin every day."

"Exactly."

I nodded.

"They do."

"In hospitals."

"Under supervision."

"Not inside someone's home."

His face twitched.

Only once.

But I saw it.

So did Detective Marcus Hale.

He quietly wrote something in his notebook.

I looked around the chapel.

"Maya called me twenty-three days before she died."

I pressed play on my phone.

Her trembling voice filled the room.

"Lena... I don't know what's happening."

"Daniel keeps bringing me smoothies."

"After I drink them... I get dizzy."

"The baby's movements stop for hours."

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel shouted.

"Turn that off!"

I didn't.

The recording continued.

"If something happens to me..."

"Please don't let them say I imagined it."

The audio ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel's attorney, who had quietly entered the chapel moments earlier, stepped forward.

"My client has nothing to say."

"I know."

I smiled.

"That's why Maya did the talking."

The attorney tried another approach.

"This recording proves nothing."

"No?"

I removed another evidence bag.

Inside sat a shattered ceramic mug.

Blue flowers painted around the rim.

"Maya's favorite cup."

The attorney frowned.

"So?"

"Forensics recovered residue from inside."

He folded his arms.

"What residue?"

I looked directly at Daniel.

"The same synthetic hormone."

His jaw locked.

"You poisoned her."

"I did no such thing!"

"You repeatedly exposed her to medication she wasn't prescribed."

"I was helping her."

"Without a doctor's knowledge?"

Silence.

"You told everyone she had anxiety."

"You insisted she needed calming drinks."

"You made them yourself."

Every sentence struck harder than the last.

Because every one of them was true.

Celeste suddenly exploded.

"This is insane!"

"You have no proof Daniel mixed anything!"

I turned toward her.

"No."

"But your phone does."

She froze.

I reached into my folder.

Phone records.

Location data.

Encrypted messages recovered after a warrant.

"You texted Daniel the night before Maya died."

I read aloud.

"Don't lose your nerve."

Another message.

"Tomorrow everything changes."

Then—

The final one.

Sent at 1:16 a.m.

"Once she's gone, we're finally free."

The chapel erupted.

People stood.

Several shouted.

One elderly woman slapped a hand over her mouth and whispered,

"My God..."

Celeste's face drained of color.

"Those texts are fake!"

The detective beside me calmly answered.

"We recovered them from your deleted cloud backup."

She looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

For the first time...

He abandoned her.

Then came the sentence neither of them expected.

"The investigation is no longer treating Maya's death as an accident."

Detective Hale stepped forward.

"It is now officially classified as a suspected homicide."

Daniel's legs nearly gave out.

But before anyone could move...

A loud voice echoed from the chapel entrance.

"Wait!"

Everyone turned.

A young nurse stood there, soaked by rain.

Her hospital ID still hung around her neck.

She was shaking.

"I've been trying to tell someone..."

She looked directly at me.

"I remember your sister."

"I remember what happened in that delivery room."

May you like

And with those words...

Everything changed.
