CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Clara Never Told

CHAPTER 6 — The Secret Clara Never Told

Three days later, Ashford Holdings returned to business.

News channels praised the company's swift response to an attempted corporate takeover.

Vanessa, Martin, and Daniel dominated the headlines.

But one question continued to haunt me.

Why had Clara risked everything?

She could have stayed silent.

No one would have blamed her.

Instead, she had quietly protected me for months.

It didn't make sense.

One evening, I found her in the mansion's old greenhouse watering white roses.

"You've been avoiding me," I said.

She smiled politely.

"I didn't think the owner of the house would want to spend time talking to the maid."

"I've never cared about titles."

She looked away.

"I know."

"That's why I stayed."

Something in her voice caught my attention.

"What do you mean?"

She hesitated.

For a long moment, only the sound of running water filled the greenhouse.

Finally, she reached into her apron pocket.

A faded photograph.

The edges were worn from years of being folded.

She handed it to me.

My breath caught.

It showed my mother...

Standing beside a much younger Clara.

No.

Not Clara.

A teenage girl who looked exactly like her.

"My mother?" I whispered.

Clara nodded.

"My mother worked for your family twenty-five years ago."

I looked back at the photograph.

"I've never seen this."

"Because your father hid it."

The words hit harder than any insult Vanessa had ever thrown at me.

"My mother became very sick," Clara continued quietly.

"The insurance refused to pay."

"We had nothing."

I frowned.

"So what happened?"

She smiled through tears.

"Your mother sold her own jewelry."

I stared at her.

"She paid every hospital bill."

"She told my mother that kindness should never be treated like charity."

My chest tightened.

"My mother never told me."

"She didn't tell anyone."

Clara gently folded the photograph.

"Before she died..."

"...she made me promise something."

My voice dropped to a whisper.

"What promise?"

Clara looked directly into my eyes.

"'If my son ever stands alone... stand beside him.'"

The greenhouse fell silent.

I suddenly understood.

She hadn't stayed because of my money.

She hadn't stayed because of duty.

She had stayed because of a promise...

Made by two women...

Long before either of us knew what betrayal would look like.

Tears blurred my vision.

For the first time since the accident...

I couldn't speak.

Clara smiled softly.

"Your mother saved my family."

"I was only returning the favor."

At that moment, I realized something extraordinary.

May you like

When everything I thought I owned had nearly been stolen...

The greatest treasure in my life had been quietly standing beside me all along.
