CHAPTER 3 — The Meeting They Thought They Controlled

CHAPTER 3 — The Meeting They Thought They Controlled

By eight o'clock the next morning, every seat in the executive boardroom was occupied.

The atmosphere felt less like a business meeting and more like a public execution.

I entered last.

Marcus pushed my wheelchair through the polished oak doors while Clara quietly followed with a folder of documents and a tray of coffee. As always, no one paid attention to the maid.

That was their first mistake.

Vanessa sat beside Uncle Martin, dressed in a cream-colored suit that made her look every inch the future wife of a billionaire. Daniel sat across from them, pretending to review financial reports.

My father stood at the head of the table.

"Thank you all for coming," he began. "Today's agenda concerns Adrian's ability to continue leading Ashford Holdings."

Vanessa didn't even try to hide her smile.

One board member cleared his throat.

"Given Mr. Ashford's condition, perhaps a temporary replacement would reassure investors."

"Temporary?" Uncle Martin laughed softly.

"Let's be realistic."

Several members nodded.

I remained silent.

The silence made them bolder.

Daniel slid a thick folder across the table.

"We've prepared an emergency transition plan."

Prepared.

Not discussed.

Prepared.

So this wasn't a spontaneous concern.

It had been organized weeks ago.

Vanessa reached over and squeezed Daniel's hand beneath the table.

She thought no one noticed.

Marcus did.

So did I.

My father looked at me.

"Adrian... do you wish to respond?"

I lifted my eyes slowly.

"I have only one question."

Martin smirked.

"Go ahead."

"When exactly did you begin planning my replacement?"

The room froze.

Martin recovered quickly.

"We started after your accident."

"Really?"

I looked toward Marcus.

Without saying a word, he placed a laptop in front of the projector.

A screen lit up.

Email after email appeared.

Private messages.

Meeting schedules.

Financial promises.

Every document carried dates.

Two weeks...

Before...

My accident.

Whispers exploded across the room.

Vanessa's confident smile disappeared.

Martin shot to his feet.

"Those are fake!"

Marcus calmly replied,

"Our cybersecurity department recovered them from your deleted accounts."

Another screen appeared.

Security footage.

Martin entering my father's study late at night.

Daniel arriving twenty minutes later.

Vanessa following with a folder marked "Succession Strategy."

The footage was dated...

Ten days before my crash.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Then Clara quietly placed another folder in front of my father.

"I found these while cleaning the study."

Inside were unsigned contracts promising Martin the position of Executive Chairman...

Daniel the CEO's office...

And Vanessa...

Thirty-five percent ownership through marriage.

My father slowly removed his glasses.

His face turned white.

"You planned this..."

Martin slammed both hands onto the table.

"You don't understand!"

"I understand perfectly," Father replied.

"You believed my son was already finished."

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"This proves nothing!"

"It proves enough," I answered calmly.

"But we're not finished."

Marcus nodded.

"There is one final recording."

The room went dark.

A hidden audio recording echoed through the speakers.

Vanessa's unmistakable voice.

"If the accident doesn't kill him, the wheelchair will. Investors don't follow broken men."

Daniel laughed in the recording.

Martin answered,

"Either way... Ashford Holdings becomes ours."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

My father looked at each of them with horror.

"I trusted all of you."

No one had an answer.

Because there wasn't one.

Only greed.

Only betrayal.

Only proof.

Then my father slowly turned toward me.

"I was wrong about you, son."

May you like

I simply nodded.

"The meeting isn't over yet."
