CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Curtain

CHAPTER 7 — The Mastermind Behind the Curtain

The screen remained black.

No logo.

No sender.

No traceable number.

Only four words lingered in my mind.

You're asking the wrong questions.

Marcus immediately disconnected the tablet from the network.

Richard called our cybersecurity team.

Within minutes they confirmed what none of us wanted to hear.

The message hadn't come from outside.

It had been sent from inside Sterling Global's private server.

Someone with executive-level access was still operating within my company.

Someone Daniel had protected.

By sunrise, every executive badge had been disabled.

No one entered headquarters without Marcus's approval.

The board demanded an emergency meeting.

They expected panic.

Instead, they found me standing at the head of the conference room.

No wheelchair.

No blanket.

No illusion.

I looked at every face around the table.

"Before we begin, I'd like to introduce our newest board observer."

The doors opened.

Detective Sarah Bennett walked in.

Every executive stiffened.

"This meeting is now part of an ongoing criminal investigation," she said.

"If anyone lies, destroys evidence, or leaves the room without permission, that decision will be noted."

The room fell silent.

Richard activated the projector.

A web of financial transactions filled the screen.

Money had been moving through shell companies for years.

Every trail eventually pointed to one office.

Not Daniel's.

Not Vanessa's.

Not even the CFO's.

It pointed to my father's executive suite.

The room erupted.

I looked at my father.

He didn't appear surprised.

Only tired.

"I knew this day would come," he said quietly.

"You?" I whispered.

He slowly shook his head.

"No."

Then he pressed a button beneath the conference table.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside lay dozens of folders.

"I've been collecting evidence for almost seven years."

Every eye widened.

"The theft began after your mother's death."

"I couldn't identify the leader."

"So I pretended I trusted everyone."

He looked at me sadly.

"You inherited more than the company."

"You inherited my enemies."

He opened the final folder.

Inside was one name.

Gregory Whitmore.

Vanessa's father.

The man who had remained "traveling overseas" throughout my accident.

Richard's face hardened.

"The architect."

Sarah nodded.

"We've been tracking him through offshore accounts."

My father continued.

"He manipulated Daniel's jealousy."

"He controlled Martin Reeves."

"He arranged your engagement to Vanessa."

"It was never about marriage."

"It was about ownership."

Vanessa burst into tears.

"My father told me we'd become one family."

"He never told me..."

"...he wanted Ethan dead."

Sarah's phone rang.

She listened for only a few seconds.

Then smiled.

"We've got him."

Gregory Whitmore had been arrested while attempting to board a private jet.

The investigation uncovered years of fraud, bribery, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit murder.
