CHAPTER 5 — The Crash Was Never an Accident

CHAPTER 5 — The Crash Was Never an Accident

No one spoke.

The detective's words seemed to drain the air from the ballroom.

"Someone here didn't want your accident to be an accident at all."

Every pair of eyes turned toward me.

Then toward Detective Sarah Bennett.

She walked forward with the quiet confidence of someone carrying facts instead of theories.

Marcus opened the evidence case for her.

Inside were photographs.

Mechanical reports.

Cell phone records.

A sealed evidence bag containing a small metal component.

Sarah laid the first photograph on the piano.

"My team reopened Mr. Sterling's accident after receiving anonymous evidence three days ago."

She looked toward Walter Brooks.

"I believe that evidence came from you."

Walter nodded.

"I couldn't stay silent anymore."

Sarah continued.

"The original investigation concluded excessive speed caused the vehicle to leave the highway."

She placed another photograph beside the first.

"It didn't."

She held up the twisted metal part.

"The steering linkage on Mr. Sterling's vehicle had been deliberately cut."

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Someone whispered,

"My God..."

Sarah's voice remained calm.

"The cut was clean."

"Made with professional equipment."

"It failed only after the vehicle reached highway speed."

I felt a chill run through me.

I remembered the moment perfectly.

The steering wheel had suddenly gone weightless.

No response.

No control.

Then the guardrail.

The rollover.

The darkness.

It hadn't been bad luck.

Someone had planned it.

Vanessa looked horrified.

"Ethan..."

"I swear I knew nothing about this."

I looked at her.

For the first time that evening...

I believed her.

She was greedy.

Cruel.

Opportunistic.

But she wasn't clever enough to engineer murder.

Someone else had.

Sarah clicked a remote.

Security footage appeared on the ballroom's enormous projection screen.

The timestamp showed the underground parking garage at company headquarters.

Three nights before my accident.

A hooded figure approached my black sedan.

They disappeared beneath the vehicle.

Seven minutes later they walked away.

Face hidden.

Hands gloved.

Then Sarah froze the frame.

"The person's identity wasn't visible."

She zoomed in.

"But this was."

A silver ring.

Heavy.

Distinctive.

Engraved with the Sterling family crest.

Only senior members of my family owned one.

I slowly turned toward my relatives.

Daniel instinctively hid his right hand behind his back.

Too late.

Marcus had already seen.

"So have I," he said quietly.

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"This proves nothing."

Sarah nodded.

"By itself?"

"No."

She produced another document.

"But combined with GPS records showing your phone was in the garage..."

"...bank transfers totaling four hundred thousand dollars..."

"...and messages exchanged with a contract mechanic..."

"It proves quite a lot."

Daniel staggered backward.

My uncle looked at his own son with disbelief.

"Daniel..."

"Tell me she's lying."

Daniel remained silent.

Then he laughed.

It started softly.

Almost nervously.

Then it grew louder.

The kind of laugh people make when reality has collapsed.

"You always were Father's favorite."

His eyes locked onto mine.

"Always."

"Every board meeting."

"Every family dinner."

"Every newspaper interview."

"'Ethan is brilliant.'"

"'Ethan will lead us into the future.'"

He spat the words.

"What about me?"

"What was I?"

"The backup?"

"The spare heir?"

He pointed at me with shaking hands.

"You inherited everything because you were born first."

"You never earned it."

I answered quietly.

"So you tried to kill me."

His jaw tightened.

"I tried to fix history."

The ballroom erupted.

Several guests backed away from him.

Even Vanessa stared in horror.

"You actually..."

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"The crash was supposed to be clean."

"No witnesses."

"No suspicion."

"But you survived."

His eyes filled with hatred.

"And somehow..."

"...you survived everything."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Daniel Sterling."

"You're under citizen's detention until detectives complete the arrest."

Daniel suddenly shoved Marcus aside.

He ran.

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Guests screamed.

Tables overturned.

Daniel sprinted toward the service corridor.

Marcus was already chasing him.

Three security officers followed.

The sound of pounding footsteps echoed through the mansion.

Then—

A crash.

A shout.

Silence.

Thirty seconds later Marcus returned.

His tie was crooked.

A small cut marked his cheek.

Daniel walked beside him in handcuffs.

Head lowered.

Everything was over.

Or so I thought.

Sarah looked at me.

"I'm afraid it isn't."

She opened a second evidence envelope.

"We discovered Daniel wasn't acting alone."

The ballroom fell silent again.

"There was another person giving instructions."

My heart sank.

"Who?"

Sarah slowly lifted her eyes.

"We don't know."

May you like

"But whoever they are..."

"...they've already disappeared."
