CHAPTER 3: The House of Lies Falls Apart

CHAPTER 3: The House of Lies Falls Apart
Daniel's grip tightened around my throat.
The carving knife trembled against my skin.
Outside, red and blue lights flashed through every window, painting the hallway in alternating colors like a heartbeat.
No one moved.
Detective Chloe Parker's voice echoed from the other side of the front door.
"Daniel, listen carefully. We know she has severe burns. We know she's injured. We also know you're holding a knife to her throat."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"She's bluffing."
But his voice lacked conviction.
Because deep down, he knew she wasn't.
The hidden camera beneath the kitchen island had captured everything—from the moment my hand touched the burner until now.
He swallowed hard.
"Turn it off," he whispered to me.
"What?"
"The camera."
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I can't."
That was true.
The emergency protocol couldn't be disabled from inside the house.
Once activated, it would continue streaming until the police shut it down themselves.
Daniel's breathing became ragged.
"You planned this."
I met his stare.
"No."
"I planned to survive."
His face twisted with rage.
"You set me up!"
Before I could answer, Linda screamed from behind us.
"Daniel! Stop talking to her! Get her downstairs!"
Frank had already disappeared toward the basement door.
He returned carrying a heavy coil of rope.
"I've got this," he muttered.
"We tie her up. Tell the police she attacked you. Self-defense."
For one horrifying moment...
Daniel actually considered it.
Then Detective Parker spoke again.
"Frank Brooks."
His head snapped toward the front door.
"We see the rope."
Linda gasped.
"You are all being recorded."
Silence.
A young officer standing beside Detective Parker called out.
"The livestream is still active!"
Another officer held up a tablet.
On the screen...
Daniel saw himself.
Holding the knife.
Holding me.
Everything was being broadcast in real time.
His face drained of color.
"They're... watching?"
Every officer outside.
Every dispatcher.
Every investigator.
Watching.
"No..." Daniel whispered.
"No..."
Linda rushed toward him.
"They're lying!"
"They can't see inside the house!"
Detective Parker answered instantly.
"I can tell you exactly what's happening."
She spoke slowly.
"Linda is standing behind you wearing a burgundy sweater."
Linda froze.
"Frank is holding a yellow nylon rope in his right hand."
Frank instinctively dropped it.
"It has blue paint stains near one end."
The rope hit the floor.
Daniel looked around the hallway as though cameras had suddenly appeared everywhere.
His confidence collapsed.
He had spent eighteen months controlling every room in this house.
Now every room belonged to the police.
His panic exploded.
"You did this!"
He shoved me violently toward the staircase.
My shoulder slammed into the wooden railing.
Pain shot through my burned hand.
He raised the knife again—
BANG!
The front door burst open.
"POLICE!"
Six officers flooded into the foyer.
Weapons drawn.
"DROP THE KNIFE!"
Daniel grabbed me tighter.
"I'll kill her!"
"No!"
Linda screamed.
"Daniel!"
Frank backed toward the kitchen with both hands raised.
"I wasn't involved!"
One officer barked,
"Get on the ground!"
Frank immediately obeyed.
Linda didn't.
She pointed at me.
"She's lying!"
Another officer intercepted her.
"Ma'am, on the ground. Now."
"I've done nothing!"
"NOW."
She slowly lowered herself, still shouting.
"She's destroying this family!"
Detective Parker never took her eyes off Daniel.
"You have nowhere to go."
His arm tightened around my neck.
Then...
He made the biggest mistake of his life.
He looked toward the back door.
Toward escape.
For one second...
The knife moved away from my throat.
That was all Officer Ramirez needed.
The Taser fired.
Two probes struck Daniel squarely in the chest.
Forty-nine thousand volts ripped through his body.
His muscles locked.
The knife flew from his hand.
I fell forward.
Strong arms caught me before I struck the floor.
Detective Parker.
"You're safe."
Those two words broke something inside me.
For eighteen months, I had dreamed of hearing them.
I burst into tears.
Not quiet tears.
Not polite tears.
The kind that come after surviving something you thought would kill you.
Behind us, officers handcuffed Daniel as he screamed.
"She ruined my life!"
Detective Parker didn't even look back.
May you like
"No, Daniel."
"You did."
