CHAPTER 2: The Sirens Came Too Late… or Right on Time

CHAPTER 2: The Sirens Came Too Late… or Right on Time
The sound was faint at first.
A distant wail carried on the cold evening wind.
Daniel paused.
His smile faltered for only a fraction of a second before arrogance settled back across his face.
"Someone else’s problem."
He turned toward the stove again, tossing another raw steak onto the cast-iron pan.
"You've got exactly five minutes to stop crying."
Oil hissed violently.
The smell of burned meat mixed with the scent of scorched skin.
Every second felt like an hour.
Inside my chest, my heart pounded so violently I wondered if they could hear it.
Please...
Come faster.
Linda settled into one of the kitchen chairs, swirling red wine inside her crystal glass.
"You know what's wrong with girls these days?" she sighed dramatically toward Frank.
"They're raised believing they're equals."
Frank never looked away from the football game playing in the adjoining living room.
"Mmm."
"Marriage requires discipline."
"Mmm."
Daniel laughed.
"Exactly."
He glanced down at my blistered hand.
"Maybe next time she'll remember medium rare."
All three laughed.
None of them noticed the tiny camera hidden beneath the marble countertop silently capturing every expression.
Every laugh.
Every word.
Every confession.
—
Seven blocks away.
Detective Chloe Parker's phone vibrated against the dashboard of her unmarked SUV.
The alert wasn't a text.
It wasn't a phone call.
It was the emergency protocol she'd personally created after watching too many abused women die while waiting for enough evidence.
The screen flashed bright red.
EMERGENCY ACTIVATED.
LIVE VIDEO STREAM CONNECTED.
HIGH RISK DOMESTIC ASSAULT.
Address confirmed.
GPS confirmed.
Victim identified.
Live audio active.
Chloe tapped the screen.
Daniel's voice immediately blasted through the speakers.
"...she should be grateful I didn't break the other hand."
Silence filled the vehicle.
Then Chloe slammed the emergency lights on.
"Dispatch."
The radio crackled.
"Go."
"I need every available unit at my location."
"Priority?"
She never took her eyes off the streaming video.
"Priority One."
The dispatcher hesitated.
"Reason?"
Chloe watched Daniel shove me against the counter hard enough to make my head strike the cabinet.
She answered without emotion.
"Attempted murder."
—
Inside the house...
Daniel tossed the spatula toward me.
"Pick it up."
My burned fingers barely moved.
"I can't."
The words came out as little more than a whisper.
Wrong answer.
His chair scraped backward.
He crossed the kitchen in three long strides.
Before I could react—
CRACK.
His open palm slammed across my face.
The force threw me sideways into the refrigerator.
Stars exploded behind my eyes.
Linda sighed dramatically.
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
She smiled.
"Not the face."
"People ask questions."
She pointed toward my ribs.
"They don't see under sweaters."
Daniel nodded as though she had offered practical household advice.
"Good point."
He drove his steel-toed boot into my side.
Once.
Twice.
The third kick stole every breath from my lungs.
Pain flooded through my body.
I curled into myself instinctively.
Frank finally looked away from the television.
Not because his daughter-in-law was being beaten.
Because Daniel had partially blocked the screen.
"You mind?"
Daniel stepped aside.
"Sorry."
"Thanks."
Frank returned to watching football.
—
Inside Detective Parker's SUV...
Every officer listening over the shared channel had gone completely silent.
One veteran deputy muttered a curse under his breath.
Another simply said,
"My God..."
Chloe's jaw tightened.
"ETA?"
"Three minutes."
"Too long."
She pushed the accelerator to the floor.
The SUV roared through a red light.
Sirens screamed.
—
Back inside the kitchen...
Daniel crouched beside me.
He grabbed my chin painfully.
"You know what your problem is?"
Blood dripped from the corner of my mouth.
"You still think someone is coming."
His smile widened.
"No one ever comes."
He leaned closer.
"You have no family."
"They're dead."
"You have no money."
"I control it."
"You have no friends."
"I made sure of that."
His fingers tightened around my jaw.
"And even if the police showed up..."
He chuckled softly.
"My mother would tell them you're unstable."
Linda raised her wine glass.
"I certainly would."
Frank nodded.
"We'd all say you slipped."
Daniel kissed my forehead.
"They always believe three witnesses instead of one hysterical woman."
Every word.
Every lie.
Every conspiracy.
Broadcast live.
—
Twenty yards outside.
Three black-and-white patrol cars turned onto the street without slowing.
Then four.
Then five.
Neighbors began opening front doors.
Porch lights flickered on one after another.
A little boy riding his bicycle stopped in the middle of the sidewalk.
"What happened?"
Nobody answered.
The convoy surrounded the house.
Brakes screamed.
Doors flew open.
Officers poured out with weapons drawn.
"POLICE!"
"SEARCH WARRANT!"
"COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!"
Inside the kitchen, every smile disappeared.
Daniel froze.
Linda lowered her wineglass so suddenly it shattered against the floor.
Frank muted the television.
Nobody moved.
The pounding on the front door shook the entire house.
"POLICE!"
"OPEN THE DOOR!"
Daniel stared at me.
Then toward the windows.
Then back at me.
His confidence evaporated.
"What did you do?"
I said nothing.
He grabbed my throat.
Hard.
"If you called them—"
BANG!
The front door splintered.
"POLICE!"
Another crash echoed through the hallway.
Heavy boots thundered across hardwood floors.
Daniel panicked.
For the first time in eighteen months...
He looked afraid.
He yanked me upright by my hair and dragged me toward the hallway.
"You're coming with me."
Linda finally found her voice.
"The basement!"
Frank jumped from his chair.
"Take her downstairs!"
"They'll never search before we hide her!"
Daniel wrapped one arm around my neck.
The other shoved a carving knife against my throat.
Cold steel touched my skin.
"If they want you..."
His breathing became frantic.
"They're going to have to watch you die first."
Then a voice echoed through the hallway.
Calm.
Clear.
Unwavering.
"Daniel Brooks!"
Detective Chloe Parker.
"I can see you."
"You are surrounded."
"Every room in this house is covered."
"Every assault you committed tonight has been recorded."
Daniel's face turned white.
My heartbeat stopped.
How...
Then I remembered.
The hidden camera wasn't only recording.
It was still streaming.
Detective Parker wasn't guessing.
She was watching.
Live.
Every second.
Every movement.
Every desperate mistake.
Daniel tightened the knife one last time.
Then Detective Parker spoke again.
One sentence.
Eight words.
Words that shattered the illusion his family had built for nearly two years.
May you like
"Daniel..."
"...your own kitchen has already testified against you."
