CHAPTER 7 – THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 7 – THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

The gunshot echoed across the estate.

"DOWN!"

Gabriel tackled Emiliano and the girls behind a stone planter as two more bullets tore through the greenhouse windows.

Glass rained over the orchids.

The tactical team returned fire toward the tree line.

"North ridge!" one officer shouted. "Sniper, twelve o'clock!"

Rosa ignored the blood soaking through her shoulder.

Instead, she crawled toward Martina and Daniela.

"Cover their ears."

The children buried their faces against Emiliano's chest as another volley shattered the remaining glass.

Within seconds, Gabriel's sniper team answered.

A single precise shot rang out.

Then silence.

"The shooter is down," a voice crackled over the radio.

But Rosa didn't relax.

"No," she whispered.

"He was only buying time."

The elegant older woman smiled even with rifles aimed at her.

"You finally remember how our organization works."

She looked at Rosa.

"You were always the smartest agent we had."

Emiliano stared at Rosa.

"Agent?"

She nodded.

"My real name is Isabella Cruz."

"I've spent five years pretending to be your maid because your wife's murder uncovered something much larger than a single assassination."

The older woman laughed softly.

"You still think this was about money."

"It wasn't."

She looked directly at Emiliano.

"Your company was only a doorway."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"Cuff her."

Two officers approached.

The woman never resisted.

Instead, she calmly asked Emiliano,

"Did you ever wonder why your wife insisted on handling the foundation's international donations herself?"

Emiliano frowned.

"She ran our charity."

"Exactly."

The woman smiled.

"Until she discovered what those donations were really funding."

The words struck him like lightning.

His wife hadn't died because of an accident.

She had died because she found the truth.

Back at the mansion, investigators worked through the underground vault all night.

Every hard drive was decrypted.

Every document photographed.

The operation was staggering.

The organization known only as The Wolf Circle had infiltrated banks, shipping companies, charities, law firms, and political offices across several countries.

The Herrera Foundation had unknowingly been used to launder millions of dollars.

When Emiliano's wife discovered irregular transfers, she secretly copied the financial records.

Before she could expose them...

Her car brakes had been sabotaged.

The "accident" had been murder.

Emiliano sat alone in his study until sunrise.

For four years he had blamed fate.

Now he knew the truth.

His wife hadn't abandoned him.

She had been silenced.

Rosa entered quietly, her arm in a sling.

"I'm sorry."

Emiliano looked up.

"For what?"

"I couldn't save her."

He shook his head.

"You saved my daughters."

She lowered her eyes.

"I almost failed them too."

Emiliano stood.

"No."

"I failed them."

"I believed lies because they were convenient."

"I questioned the one person who never betrayed me."

His voice broke.

"When Martina asked if I was angry with her..."

"I realized I had become a stranger inside my own home."

Rosa didn't answer.

She simply placed a small envelope on his desk.

Inside was a letter.

It had been written by his late wife only days before her death.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

If you're reading this, then something happened to me.

Please don't let grief make you stop trusting good people.

Especially the quiet ones.

Tears blurred Emiliano's vision.

Three weeks later, the international investigation exploded across the headlines.

More than eighty arrests were made.

Corrupt executives, judges, and politicians disappeared into federal custody.

The woman known only as "Director" accepted a life sentence in exchange for identifying the remaining leaders.

Patricia testified against the organization.

Her cooperation spared her the harshest punishment, but she was still sentenced to decades behind bars for conspiracy, child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and her role in the criminal enterprise.

When the courtroom asked if she wished to say anything to Emiliano, she looked at him for a long moment.

"I'm sorry."

He simply replied,

"So am I."

May you like

Then he walked away.

It was the last time he ever looked at her.
