CHAPTER 4 – THE HIDDEN VAULT

CHAPTER 4 – THE HIDDEN VAULT

The tactical team secured Patricia within seconds.

She didn't resist.

She simply laughed.

Not the laugh of someone losing.

The laugh of someone waiting.

"You've arrested the wrong person," she said calmly.

Emiliano stormed into the mansion at last.

The first thing he saw was Rosa.

Her face was bruised.

Blood stained her uniform.

Yet she wasn't thinking about herself.

She ran straight toward the hidden bookshelf.

"My babies!"

The secret door swung open.

Daniela and Martina rushed into her arms, sobbing uncontrollably.

Only then did they notice Emiliano.

Both girls froze.

Neither one ran to him.

That hurt more than anything Patricia had done.

Emiliano slowly knelt before them.

"I'm sorry."

His voice cracked.

"I'm so... so sorry."

Martina looked up with tear-filled eyes.

"Are you mad at us?"

Those six words shattered him.

He gathered both daughters into his arms.

"No."

"Daddy was blind."

"And Daddy is never letting anyone hurt you again."

For the first time in months...

The girls hugged him back.

Meanwhile, Gabriel led another team into the underground level beneath the wine cellar.

The blueprint of the mansion showed nothing there.

Yet the scanners clearly detected movement.

They discovered fresh concrete.

New electrical wiring.

A steel door hidden behind shelves of imported wine.

"It wasn't part of the original construction," Gabriel muttered.

"Someone built this later."

Industrial cutting tools screamed as they forced the vault open.

The heavy door slowly swung inward.

Everyone expected stolen cash.

Gold.

Weapons.

Instead...

They found walls covered with photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Every picture showed Emiliano.

His daughters.

His daily routine.

Business meetings.

School pickups.

Hospital visits.

Even family vacations.

Every movement had been documented.

Gabriel felt a chill crawl down his spine.

"This isn't a vault."

"It's an operations room."

One wall displayed dozens of fake passports.

Another held burner phones.

Several laptops continued running surveillance software.

One officer opened a filing cabinet.

Inside were thick folders labeled with names.

Judges.

Police officers.

Bank executives.

Politicians.

Each file contained payments.

Blackmail material.

Secret photographs.

Gabriel stared in disbelief.

"This is much bigger than Patricia."

Another officer called out.

"Sir... you need to see this."

He held up a folder.

Across the cover was written in bold black letters:

PROJECT HERRERA

Emiliano took it with trembling hands.

Inside was a photograph of himself taken nearly four years earlier.

The date matched exactly one week after his wife had died in what police ruled a tragic car accident.

The next page contained a chilling sentence.

Phase One: Gain the widower's trust.

Candidate Selected: Patricia Alvarez.

Emiliano's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

He turned another page.

Primary Objective: Secure legal marriage.

Secondary Objective: Obtain control of Herrera Holdings through inheritance.

Another page.

Obstacle Assessment:

Two daughters remain legal heirs.

Contingency plans prepared.

His vision blurred.

"They planned..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Because he already knew.

His daughters had never been family to Patricia.

They had always been obstacles.

Back upstairs, handcuffed and surrounded by armed officers, Patricia watched Emiliano emerge from the basement carrying the file.

For the first time...

Her confidence disappeared.

Emiliano stopped directly in front of her.

He opened the folder.

Then quietly asked one question.

"Who recruited you?"

Patricia remained silent.

He placed another photograph in front of her.

It showed Patricia shaking hands with a man whose face had been deliberately blacked out.

Only one detail remained visible.

A silver signet ring engraved with the image of a wolf.

Gabriel's expression suddenly changed.

He had seen that symbol before.

Years ago.

During an international organized crime investigation that had mysteriously been shut down.

He whispered only two words.

"The Wolf."

Patricia's face turned deathly pale.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

She looked genuinely afraid.

Then she whispered,

"You don't understand."

Emiliano's voice was ice.

"Help me understand."

Patricia slowly looked toward the shattered front door.

Toward the darkening evening sky.

Then she said the words that made every officer instinctively reach for their weapons.

"He already knows you found the vault."

May you like

"And if he's coming himself..."

"...everyone in this house is already dead."
