CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

CHAPTER 7 – THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Three days later.

The nation watched as Margaret Whitmore was escorted into the federal courthouse in handcuffs.

Television helicopters circled overhead.

Reporters shouted questions from behind police barricades.

Yet inside Courtroom Seven, no cameras were allowed.

This was no longer a sensational family dispute.

It had become one of the largest federal corruption investigations in decades.

I was no longer lying in a hospital bed.

Though every step still pulled at the healing incision across my abdomen, I entered the courtroom wearing a charcoal suit instead of a hospital gown.

Noah and Nora were safe under the protection of U.S. Marshals.

For the first time since they were born, I knew exactly where they were—and exactly who was guarding them.

Margaret glanced at me as she was led to the defense table.

Gone were the designer dresses, the pearls, the carefully styled hair.

She still tried to hold her head high.

But fear had finally found her.

Judge Samuel Rhodes presided over the emergency detention hearing.

"The United States seeks to deny bail."

The prosecutor stood.

"We believe the defendant represents both a flight risk and an immediate danger to witnesses."

He projected photographs across the courtroom screen.

The bribery ledger.

The security footage.

The deleted emails.

Amanda Collins' sworn testimony.

Then came the final exhibit.

A voice recording.

Amanda had secretly activated her phone during her final meeting with Margaret.

The courtroom speakers crackled.

Margaret's unmistakable voice filled the room.

"If Olivia survives, we still have Ethan. If Ethan refuses, someone else becomes guardian. Either way, the Carter Trust belongs to us."

Gasps rippled through the courtroom.

Margaret closed her eyes.

For the first time...

She looked defeated.

Then the recording continued.

A second voice entered.

Male.

Calm.

Cold.

"You keep thinking too small, Margaret."

Every federal agent in the courtroom sat upright.

I recognized that voice.

Not from home.

Not from work.

From Washington.

Director Henry Lawson slowly stood.

His face had gone white.

"I know that voice."

The prosecutor looked toward him.

"Who is it?"

Lawson answered quietly.

"Attorney General Victor Hale."

The courtroom exploded.

Within two hours, FBI tactical teams surrounded the Department of Justice offices in Washington.

Attorney General Victor Hale had vanished.

His office was empty.

His government phone lay smashed inside a fireplace.

His private jet was missing.

But he hadn't escaped cleanly.

Cybercrime investigators recovered encrypted files from one of his hidden servers.

Thousands of documents.

Bribery records.

Judicial assignments.

Political blackmail.

Corporate extortion.

And one classified list.

Across the top, in bold letters:

PROJECT BALANCE.

The files revealed an organization operating for nearly twenty years.

Powerful judges who refused corruption...

Were removed.

Some through scandal.

Some through bribery.

Some through carefully engineered "accidents."

Judge Eleanor Brooks.

Judge Michael Santos.

Judge Rebecca Allen.

Now...

Me.

Margaret Whitmore had never controlled the operation.

She had simply financed one branch of it.

Victor Hale had orchestrated everything.

That evening, federal agents located Hale at a private marina on the Gulf Coast.

Cornered by marshals, he refused to surrender.

Instead, he smiled into the cameras.

"You think this ends with me?"

His final words chilled every investigator present.

"There are hundreds more."

Then...

He pulled a pistol.

One shot echoed across the harbor.

By the time agents reached him...

Victor Hale was dead.

The conspiracy had lost its leader.

But not every secret.
