CHAPTER 3 – THE OPERATION THAT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT

CHAPTER 3 – THE OPERATION THAT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT
The words hung in the recovery suite like smoke.
"...I asked because I wanted to be prepared."
Ethan's voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
Chief Ruiz folded his arms.
"Prepared for your wife dying?"
Ethan rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"Olivia is a federal judge. She receives threats. We were expecting twins. High-risk pregnancies happen every day."
"It wasn't unreasonable."
"No," I whispered.
"It wasn't."
He looked relieved for half a heartbeat.
Then I continued.
"But having adoption papers notarized three weeks before delivery was."
His face hardened.
The room fell silent again.
A detective hurried through the doorway carrying a tablet.
"Chief."
"We pulled the maternity security logs."
Ruiz took the device.
The screen showed a timeline of everyone entering the restricted labor and delivery floor.
One name appeared over and over.
ETHAN WHITMORE.
7:18 A.M.
8:42 A.M.
9:11 A.M.
9:36 A.M.
The emergency surgery had not begun until 10:04.
He had entered the restricted area four separate times.
The head nurse frowned.
"That's impossible."
"We only authorized him once."
Ruiz looked up.
"Who granted the other entries?"
No one answered.
"Bring up the cameras."
The detective tapped the screen.
Video appeared.
There was Ethan speaking with someone near the medication station.
The image zoomed.
A nurse.
Young.
Blonde.
Hospital badge.
She smiled nervously while Ethan handed her a white envelope.
Not a handshake.
Not paperwork.
An envelope.
The detective froze the frame.
"What is that?"
The nurse beside me gasped.
"That's Amanda."
Another nurse whispered,
"She's agency staff."
"I've only seen her twice."
Ruiz immediately turned.
"Find her."
An officer spoke into his radio.
Minutes later the answer returned.
"Chief..."
"Amanda Collins checked out of her shift thirty minutes ago."
"She never signed out."
"Her locker is empty."
"What about her address?"
"No one's there."
"Phone?"
"Disconnected."
The room became ice.
Someone had disappeared.
My obstetrician, Dr. Elaine Harper, entered carrying my chart.
She looked exhausted.
"I heard security requested the surgical records."
Ruiz nodded.
"I'd like to review everything."
She handed him the file.
"The surgery became necessary because both babies experienced sudden fetal distress."
I knew those words already.
They had repeated them during surgery.
But now...
Every sentence sounded different.
Ruiz read quietly.
Then stopped.
"What medication was administered at 9:47?"
Dr. Harper leaned closer.
"...That can't be right."
"What?"
She flipped another page.
"I never ordered this."
Every eye turned toward her.
She pointed to the chart.
"Terbutaline."
"It was documented as administered before surgery."
She looked confused.
"I specifically canceled that medication."
The detective frowned.
"Can it cause complications?"
"It can."
"In certain patients..."
She looked directly at me.
"...it can trigger dangerous reactions."
Cold spread through my body.
Ruiz's expression darkened.
"Who administered it?"
Dr. Harper checked the electronic signature.
Then her face lost all color.
"...Amanda Collins."
The missing nurse.
Outside the room, someone screamed.
Margaret.
"This is ridiculous!"
"I want my lawyer!"
"I'll sue this hospital!"
No one answered her.
Because inside the recovery suite...
Everyone had just realized this was no longer family drama.
Someone had tampered with medical care.
Ruiz looked at Ethan.
"When did you meet Amanda Collins?"
"I don't know her."
The detective rotated the tablet.
The frozen security image stared back.
"You handed her an envelope."
"It contained thank-you cards."
"No."
"It contained cash."
Ethan shook his head.
"You can't prove that."
Ruiz smiled.
"No."
"But we can open every bank account you've touched in the last year."
For the first time...
Fear crossed Ethan's face.
Real fear.
I watched the man I'd loved for eight years.
The man who had kissed my forehead before surgery.
Who had whispered,
"I'll be waiting when you wake up."
Now I wondered...
Had he been hoping I wouldn't?
Another officer rushed inside.
"Chief!"
"We found something."
He handed Ruiz a plastic evidence bag.
Inside...
A disposable hospital visitor badge.
Amanda Collins.
Folded tightly beneath it...
A receipt.
Bank withdrawal.
$250,000.
Cash.
Withdrawn yesterday.
From...
Whitmore Family Holdings.
The account controlled by Margaret Whitmore.
Every person in the room looked at Ethan.
He closed his eyes.
Not denying it.
Not protesting.
Just... defeated.
May you like
Then he whispered words that made my blood freeze.
"My mother wasn't supposed to go this far."
