Chapter 4: The Successession Plan

Chapter 4: The Successession Plan

No one in the hidden office spoke.

The words glowing on the computer screen seemed impossible to process.

Objective: Remove Robert Harper from financial control before December 31.

Emily looked at Robert.

His face had become unnaturally pale, but it wasn't fear that struck her.

It was recognition.

He knew something.

"Robert," Agent Brooks said carefully. "Have you ever seen this document before?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked closer to the monitor, reading every line with trembling hands.

Then he whispered,

"I thought we destroyed this."

The room froze.

Michael's head snapped toward his father.

"What did you just say?"

Robert closed his eyes.

"I said... I thought it was gone."

Brooks took a slow step forward.

"You'd better explain."

Robert lowered himself into an old wooden chair.

For several seconds he simply stared at the dusty floor.

"When I built Harper Development," he began quietly, "I didn't do it alone."

Emily had never heard that sentence before.

To the world, Robert Harper was the self-made billionaire who had transformed half of Boston's skyline.

Apparently, that wasn't the whole story.

"There were four of us."

He raised four fingers.

"I was the public face."

"David Keller handled financing."

"Anthony Russo negotiated political connections."

"And Victor Sloan..."

Robert's voice faltered.

"...Victor made problems disappear."

Emily felt a chill.

"What kind of problems?"

Robert looked directly at her.

"The kind you never ask about."

Silence settled over the room.

Brooks remained expressionless.

"Continue."

Robert nodded weakly.

"Twenty-five years ago we agreed that if one partner became... incapable... the others would assume control."

Emily frowned.

"Incapable?"

"Illness."

"Incompetence."

"Or death."

Michael interrupted.

"What does this have to do with me?"

Robert turned toward him.

"Everything."

Michael frowned.

"I don't understand."

"No," Robert replied sadly.

"You never wanted to."

He pointed toward the monitor.

"That succession agreement was canceled fifteen years ago."

Brooks looked back at the document.

"The metadata says it was modified eighteen months ago."

The technician nodded.

"Multiple edits."

"Different users."

"Most recently..."

He stopped.

Brooks looked at him.

"What?"

He enlarged the access log.

A username appeared.

S.HARPER_ADMIN

Everyone slowly turned toward Susan.

She stood perfectly still.

"I didn't write that."

Brooks didn't react.

"Did you access it?"

Susan hesitated.

"Answer carefully."

Finally she nodded.

"Yes."

"But not for the reasons you think."

Michael grabbed her arm.

"Susan..."

She pulled away.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"I'm done protecting everyone."

That sentence changed everything.

Emily watched Robert's eyes widen.

Brooks folded her arms.

"Go on."

Susan took a long breath.

"You all think this started because Michael and I had an affair."

She laughed bitterly.

"It didn't."

Emily felt anger rising.

"Don't you dare justify this."

"I'm not."

Susan looked at her with genuine regret.

"I'm explaining why it happened."

She turned back toward the agents.

"Someone approached me six years ago."

"Who?"

"I never learned his real name."

"He called himself Martin."

"What did he want?"

"Access."

"To Robert."

"To the family."

"To the trust."

Brooks remained silent.

Susan continued.

"He already knew everything."

"Robert's health."

"The company's investments."

"The trust structure."

"He knew Michael was... vulnerable."

Michael stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

She met his eyes.

"It means you were lonely."

"You wanted approval."

"You wanted someone to tell you you were smarter than your father."

Michael looked away.

Susan's voice became quieter.

"I was supposed to get close to you."

Emily felt sick.

"No..."

Susan nodded.

"At first..."

"It was manipulation."

"I was gathering information."

Robert whispered,

"My God..."

Susan wiped away a tear.

"But then it became something else."

"I know that doesn't excuse what happened."

"It doesn't."

"But it wasn't how this began."

Brooks studied her carefully.

"This Martin."

"Do you have a last name?"

"No."

"A photograph?"

"No."

"A phone number?"

"They changed constantly."

"But I do have one thing."

Every head turned.

She pointed toward the black notebook agents had removed from her purse.

"I wrote everything down."

Brooks opened the notebook.

Inside were years of handwritten entries.

Dates.

Meetings.

Bank accounts.

Instructions.

Names.

Some pages contained only initials.

Others contained detailed conversations.

Brooks stopped halfway through.

Her expression hardened.

"What is it?" Emily asked.

The agent slowly turned the notebook around.

One page listed monthly payments.

Beside each payment was a recipient.

Politicians.

Lawyers.

Real estate executives.

Bank officers.

And one final name.

Special Agent Daniel Pierce

The room went silent.

One of the younger FBI agents leaned over Brooks' shoulder.

His face immediately lost all color.

"Ma'am..."

Brooks looked at him.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"Daniel Pierce works in our Boston field office."

No one breathed.

Brooks carefully closed the notebook.

"Nobody leaves this house."

Her tone had completely changed.

She looked at every member of her own team.

"Phones."

"Now."

Without argument, every FBI agent placed their phones on the table.

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

Brooks answered without hesitation.

"If one of our own is compromised..."

She glanced toward the notebook.

"...then I don't yet know who I can trust."

A heavy silence settled over the mansion.

Outside, rain began tapping softly against the tall windows.

Inside, suspicion spread through the room like poison.

Then, from somewhere upstairs—

A door slammed.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

"I thought the house was cleared," Brooks said sharply.

"So did I," another agent replied.

A radio crackled.

"Agent Brooks, we've got movement on the third floor."

"What kind of movement?"

"Thermal picked up one heat signature."

Brooks frowned.

"Impossible."

The house had already been searched.

Every room.

Every hallway.

Every closet.

Yet someone was still inside.

Someone who had remained hidden throughout the entire raid.

Brooks reached for her sidearm.

"So much for everyone being accounted for."

The agents quietly spread out.

Emily watched one of them disappear up the staircase.

Seconds later—

A single gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Then came a man's scream.

And just before the radio went dead, one terrified voice shouted,

"The hard drive—he's trying to destroy the hard drive!"
