Chapter 3: The Raid

Chapter 3: The Raid

No one moved.

The three thunderous knocks still echoed through the mansion as shards of crystal from Susan's dropped wineglass glittered across the marble floor.

Outside, red and blue lights washed over the grand windows in rhythmic flashes.

Someone whispered, "This can't be happening."

It was Claire.

She stood frozen beside the fireplace, clutching the back of a leather chair as if it were the only thing keeping her upright.

Then came another voice.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door immediately!"

Robert Harper inhaled slowly.

His shoulders, once broad and commanding, seemed to age ten years in a single breath.

"I'll answer it," he said.

"No!" Michael snapped.

His panic was unmistakable.

"We need a lawyer first."

Robert turned toward his son with an expression Emily had never seen before.

"You should have thought about lawyers before stealing from your own family."

Michael opened his mouth to argue.

Nothing came out.

Robert crossed the foyer, unlocked the massive oak door, and stepped aside.

Five federal agents entered.

Dark jackets.

Gold badges.

Calm expressions that somehow felt colder than anger.

Leading them was a woman in her early forties with steel-gray eyes and dark hair pulled into a tight bun.

She surveyed the room in seconds.

The giant canvas.

The shattered wineglass.

The scattered financial documents.

The terrified family members.

Then she looked directly at Robert.

"Mr. Harper?"

"I am."

She produced a warrant.

"I'm Special Agent Dana Brooks. We have a federal warrant authorizing the search of this residence and the seizure of financial records, electronic devices, and corporate documents connected to the Harper Family Trust."

No one spoke.

Emily watched Michael's breathing become shallow.

Susan discreetly slipped her phone into her purse.

The agent noticed.

"So did Emily.

"Ma'am," Agent Brooks said evenly.

"Please place your purse on the table."

Susan forced a smile.

"Of course."

Her hand trembled as she complied.

Another agent immediately opened the purse.

Inside sat an expensive phone.

A second phone.

Three USB drives.

And a small notebook bound in black leather.

The agent looked toward Brooks.

"We'll be taking these."

Susan's confidence cracked.

"Those are personal."

"They're now evidence."

Michael stepped forward.

"You can't just walk into my father's house—"

"We already have."

Brooks didn't even raise her voice.

"And I'd advise you not to interfere."

Meanwhile, two agents began photographing the enormous canvas hanging beneath the chandelier.

One of them paused.

"Is this related to the investigation?"

Emily answered before anyone else could.

"No."

"It just happened to expose one crime while you were investigating another."

Several agents exchanged brief glances.

Even Brooks allowed herself the faintest hint of curiosity.

"You are?"

"Emily Harper."

"The wife."

Brooks studied her for a moment.

Then looked back at the photograph.

"I assume divorce is now on your agenda."

Emily managed the smallest smile.

"That moved to the top of the list yesterday."

For the first time all evening, someone almost laughed.

Then everything changed.

One of the younger agents emerged from Robert's private study carrying a large fireproof lockbox.

"It's locked."

Brooks looked at Robert.

"The key?"

Robert frowned.

"I don't have one."

Michael answered too quickly.

"I've never seen that before."

Emily noticed Brooks notice it too.

"Interesting," the agent murmured.

She nodded toward another investigator.

"Open it."

Within seconds a portable cutting tool whined through the silent mansion.

The lid popped open.

Every eye in the room followed it.

Inside were stacks of documents.

Several passports.

A hard drive.

Bundles of cash wrapped in bank straps.

And beneath them—

A thick ledger.

The room became impossibly still.

Brooks carefully lifted the ledger with gloved hands.

She flipped to the middle.

Page after page contained handwritten entries.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Amounts.

Initials.

Offshore companies.

Wire transfers.

Millions of dollars.

Not hundreds of thousands.

Millions.

The color drained from Robert's face.

"I've never seen that book."

Michael stared at it as though seeing a ghost.

Susan looked away.

Emily noticed.

Brooks noticed too.

"You recognize it," Brooks said.

Susan shook her head immediately.

"No."

"You looked away before I finished asking."

"I—I was just..."

She couldn't finish.

Another agent hurried into the foyer carrying a laptop.

"Agent Brooks."

"We found encrypted accounting software."

"Anything useful?"

"It connects directly to shell corporations in Florida, Delaware, the Cayman Islands, and Switzerland."

The room erupted into confused whispers.

Claire looked at her father.

"Dad..."

Robert slowly lowered himself into a chair.

"I built construction companies."

His voice sounded hollow.

"I donated hospitals."

"I funded scholarships."

"I don't even know what half those places are."

Brooks watched him carefully.

"That may be true."

"Or it may not."

"We'll determine that."

Emily stood quietly near the staircase, trying to process everything.

Yesterday she believed she'd uncovered an affair.

Tonight she was standing inside what appeared to be the center of a federal financial investigation.

The affair suddenly seemed almost insignificant.

Then an agent called from upstairs.

"Special Agent Brooks!"

Everyone looked up.

"We found a hidden room."

The mansion fell silent again.

"A what?"

The agent descended halfway down the staircase.

"There appears to be a concealed office behind the library shelving."

Robert stared upward.

"There is no hidden room."

"There is now."

Within minutes the bookshelf had been pulled open.

A narrow passage led into a windowless office no one outside the investigation had apparently known existed.

Dust coated the floor.

The air smelled stale.

On the desk sat an aging desktop computer.

Beside it rested dozens of storage boxes labeled only by years.

Brooks entered first.

Emily watched from the doorway.

One photograph immediately caught the agent's attention.

She picked it up carefully.

It showed Michael.

Susan.

And a third man Emily had never seen before.

The three stood smiling on the deck of a yacht somewhere in the Caribbean.

The picture was dated four years earlier.

Four years.

Long before Emily had suspected anything.

"Who is this?" Brooks asked.

No one answered.

She turned the photo over.

A single handwritten sentence covered the back.

Everything stays buried if everyone gets paid.

The room seemed colder.

Then another investigator powered on the old desktop.

Surprisingly—

It worked.

A password screen appeared.

The technician typed several commands.

Within seconds his expression changed completely.

"Agent Brooks..."

"What?"

"I think you'd better see this."

Brooks walked over.

The monitor displayed a directory containing hundreds of scanned contracts, wire confirmations, forged signatures, and internal financial reports.

One folder stood out from all the others.

Its title read:

HARPER SUCCESSION PLAN

Brooks clicked it open.

Only one document appeared.

She opened it.

The first line made everyone in the room stop breathing.

Objective: Remove Robert Harper from financial control before December 31.

Emily felt ice spread through her chest.

This had never been just an affair.

Someone had been planning to take everything Robert owned.

May you like

And judging by the date on the document...

The deadline was only three weeks away.
