CHAPTER 5 – Cracks in the Perfect Mask

CHAPTER 5 – Cracks in the Perfect Mask

By seven the next morning, Claire was already sitting in my office.

Three thick binders lay neatly arranged on the conference table.

A fourth folder sat apart from the others.

It was marked in red.

URGENT.

Claire looked as though she hadn't slept.

"I wish I had better news."

"I doubt that."

She slid the red folder toward me.

"We started with Vanessa's charitable foundation."

"The children's literacy fund?"

"The one she always talks about."

Claire nodded.

"It exists."

She opened the folder.

"But almost sixty-eight percent of the donations never reached a single child."

I stared at the financial statements.

Luxury hotel charges.

Private flights.

Designer boutiques.

Spa resorts.

Everything disguised as "fundraising expenses."

"How much?"

"Just over twelve million dollars."

I didn't react immediately.

Twelve million wasn't what bothered me.

It was the photographs.

Children standing beside Vanessa at charity events.

Smiling.

Holding donated books.

While she quietly siphoned off the money meant to help them.

Claire continued.

"It gets worse."

She placed another document in front of me.

"These signatures."

I recognized them instantly.

My signature.

Or at least something very close.

"They're forged."

"Our handwriting expert agrees."

Someone had approved corporate donations using my name.

Millions of dollars.

Without my knowledge.

I slowly closed the folder.

"Who had access?"

Claire hesitated.

"Only two people."

"My chief financial officer..."

"...and Vanessa."

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

It was Michael Grant.

My family attorney.

"I've reviewed the prenuptial agreement," he said.

"And?"

"It was altered."

My expression hardened.

"What do you mean?"

"The version Vanessa signed isn't the version we drafted."

I looked at Claire.

She already knew.

Michael continued.

"Several protection clauses were removed."

"The inheritance provisions changed."

"The family trust language disappeared."

"Someone replaced entire pages."

"And the signatures?"

"They appear authentic."

I understood immediately.

The pages had been swapped after I signed.

Professional work.

Not amateur fraud.

I thanked Michael and ended the call.

Claire quietly asked,

"What now?"

I stood.

"Now..."

"We stop reacting."

"It's time she starts reacting."

That afternoon I invited Vanessa to lunch.

Her favorite restaurant.

The same table where I had proposed.

She arrived wearing an elegant white dress.

Anyone watching would have seen the picture-perfect couple.

She smiled brightly.

"I was hoping yesterday was just a misunderstanding."

I pulled out her chair.

"I've been thinking."

She relaxed.

"I have too."

"I've decided we should postpone the wedding."

Her smile froze.

"Postpone?"

"There are several business issues demanding my attention."

"Only temporarily."

She reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"We can handle stress together."

"I'm not stressed."

I smiled politely.

"I'm... careful."

For the first time since I'd known her...

She looked uncertain.

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced down.

Her expression changed instantly.

Panic.

She recovered almost immediately.

"Excuse me."

She walked toward the restroom.

I watched her disappear down the hallway.

Exactly thirty seconds later...

Claire entered through the side entrance and slid into the opposite chair.

"She just received an alert."

"From?"

"Our cybersecurity team intercepted activity."

Claire lowered her voice.

"Someone is deleting files."

"Which files?"

"The charity accounts."

"They've started wiping servers."

I looked toward the hallway.

"She's trying to erase evidence."

Claire nodded.

"Too late."

"We copied everything before sunrise."

A slow smile crossed my face.

"Good."

When Vanessa returned...

She looked composed again.

Almost.

She reached for her wine.

Her hand trembled just enough to make the glass chime against the table.

"You look pale," I observed.

"I didn't sleep well."

"Neither did I."

She searched my face.

Trying to decide whether I knew.

I gave her nothing.

May you like

Only a calm smile.

The kind she used to mistake for weakness.
