CHAPTER 3 – Dinner Before the Fall

CHAPTER 3 – Dinner Before the Fall

Vanessa recovered faster than most people ever could.

Within seconds, the panic vanished from her face. She slipped back into the role that had fooled nearly everyone who knew us.

Concerned fiancée.

Future daughter-in-law.

Perfect hostess.

"Oh, Daniel," she said, crossing the kitchen with open arms. "You should have called! I would've picked you up from the airport."

She kissed my cheek.

The perfume she wore suddenly smelled artificial.

Expensive.

Calculated.

"I wanted to surprise everyone."

I smiled.

"So I see."

She laughed lightly, pretending not to notice the tension.

My mother remained silent.

She was still clutching the edge of the counter as though her knees might give out.

Vanessa glanced toward her.

"Eleanor became emotional while we were discussing future plans."

Future plans.

An interesting way to describe exile.

I walked to the refrigerator and poured myself a glass of water.

"I heard enough."

Vanessa's shoulders stiffened.

"Heard...what?"

"The conversation."

For one brief second, fear flashed across her eyes.

Then she recovered.

"I was only trying to help your mother."

My mother finally spoke.

"No, Daniel—"

I gently raised my hand.

"Mom."

She stopped.

Not because she was afraid of me.

Because she trusted me.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You said the nursing home was already expecting her."

Her smile faltered.

"I... I only meant I was researching options. You know your mother has been forgetting things lately."

My mother's eyes widened.

"I have never—"

"I know."

I cut her off softly.

Vanessa kept talking.

"I've been worried about her memory for months."

Months.

Interesting.

Because my mother's physician had given her a clean cognitive evaluation just three weeks earlier.

I had gone with her myself.

Vanessa didn't know that.

She continued building her lie.

"She gets confused. Sometimes she repeats stories. I thought professional care might be safer."

I nodded thoughtfully.

"Makes sense."

Relief washed across her face.

She thought I believed her.

"I knew you'd understand."

"I always appreciate evidence."

She blinked.

"Evidence?"

"I'm a businessman."

I took another sip of water.

"I don't make decisions based on feelings."

That part was true.

"I review facts."

The color slowly drained from her face.

Before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

It was my executive assistant, Claire.

I answered on speaker.

"Good evening, Daniel."

"Did legal send the background report I requested?"

"They did."

Vanessa frowned.

"What background report?"

I ignored her.

Claire continued.

"It includes financial history, litigation records, prior employment verification, and property searches."

Vanessa's breathing became noticeably shallower.

"Excellent."

"I'll review everything tonight."

"One more thing," Claire added.

"The forensic accountants also found several unusual transfers connected to the charitable foundation."

I smiled faintly.

"We'll discuss those tomorrow."

"I'll prepare the conference room."

The call ended.

Silence filled the kitchen.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"You investigate everyone?"

"No."

I met her eyes.

"Only people who ask my mother to disappear."

That night, Vanessa barely touched her dinner.

She kept watching me.

Trying to read me.

Trying to determine how much I knew.

I made sure she couldn't.

We discussed travel.

The weather.

The latest acquisition.

Anything except the kitchen.

Every time she relaxed...

I'd casually ask another harmless question.

"When did you first visit Silver Pines?"

She froze.

"I... I only looked online."

"I never mentioned the name."

Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth.

Neither did anyone else.

My mother quietly lowered her eyes.

Vanessa laughed too loudly.

"I must have read it somewhere."

I simply nodded.

"Perhaps."

The rest of dinner passed in uncomfortable silence.

After dessert, Vanessa excused herself.

"I have an early meeting tomorrow."

She kissed my cheek again.

"I love you."

I smiled politely.

"I know."

She went upstairs.

May you like

The moment her bedroom door closed...

My smile disappeared.
