CHAPTER 4 — THE CONFRONTATION

CHAPTER 4 — THE CONFRONTATION

The gates of Blackwell Estate slid open just as Victoria's black Mercedes swept into the circular driveway.

She stepped out wearing a cream-colored designer suit, a diamond necklace glittering against her throat, and the same practiced smile she wore for charity galas and magazine interviews.

The smile vanished the moment she saw Dominic standing at the top of the marble staircase.

He wasn't supposed to be home.

For a split second, genuine panic flashed across her face before years of manipulation took over.

"Dominic!" she exclaimed, hurrying toward him. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming back early?"

He didn't answer.

Marcus stood several feet behind him, flanked by four silent security men.

Emma remained near the hallway, instinctively placing herself between Victoria and the children's playroom.

Victoria noticed.

Her eyes hardened.

"You," she snapped. "Get back to work."

Emma didn't move.

Instead, Dominic spoke.

"No one here works for you anymore."

Victoria blinked.

"What?"

"I said..."

His voice was calm enough to chill everyone present.

"...no one here works for you anymore."

She laughed nervously.

"You're upset about something. Let's go upstairs and talk privately."

"No."

The single word echoed through the foyer.

"I'd rather talk here."

The children had just returned from school.

Lily stepped into the hallway holding Ethan's hand.

The moment they saw their father, they froze.

For a heartbeat, nobody moved.

Then Ethan whispered, "Daddy?"

Dominic knelt, arms open.

"You can come to me."

Neither child looked at him first.

They looked at Victoria.

As though waiting for permission.

Or punishment.

Victoria forced a smile.

"It's okay. Go hug your father."

Only then did they run.

Dominic caught both children in his arms.

Lily buried her face against his shoulder and began sobbing.

Ethan wrapped tiny arms around his father's neck with desperate strength.

"I'm sorry," Dominic whispered, his own voice breaking. "I'm so sorry."

Lily cried harder.

"I thought... you didn't love us anymore."

Dominic closed his eyes.

Those words hurt more than any bullet ever could.

He stood, still holding Ethan while Lily clung to his hand.

Then he looked directly at Victoria.

"They're afraid of you."

Victoria scoffed.

"Children exaggerate."

"They're terrified."

"You've been away too much to understand."

"No."

His gaze never left hers.

"I've finally understood."

Marcus placed a laptop on the dining table.

"What is this?" Victoria asked.

"Watch."

The first video played.

Lily, age four.

Victoria screaming inches from her face.

Victoria's confidence faltered.

"That's taken out of context."

The second video began.

Ethan being dragged across the nursery floor by his arm.

"It wasn't like—"

The third.

The fourth.

The fifth.

Every excuse died before reaching her lips.

She slowly backed away.

"Someone edited these."

"No."

Dominic's voice remained frighteningly steady.

"You simply forgot that lies eventually run out."

Victoria suddenly pointed toward Emma.

"She's the one poisoning them against me!"

Emma lowered her head but said nothing.

Dominic stepped between them.

"If you take one more step toward her..."

His eyes became cold enough to silence the room.

"...you'll regret it."

For the first time in ten years of marriage...

Victoria looked afraid of her husband.

"I can explain," she whispered.

"I've waited years for an explanation."

"You were never home!"

"I was building everything for this family."

"You chose your empire over us!"

Dominic nodded slowly.

"You're right."

The admission stunned everyone.

"I failed my children."

Victoria smiled triumphantly.

"Exactly."

"But I never hit them."

The smile disappeared.

"I never taught them fear."

He looked at Lily.

"What did Mommy tell you?"

The little girl hesitated.

Emma squeezed her hand gently.

Lily finally whispered,

"She said... if we told you... you'd send us away."

Dominic's expression shattered.

Victoria immediately interrupted.

"Children imagine things."

Ethan suddenly spoke.

"No."

Everyone looked at the five-year-old.

His tiny voice trembled.

"Mommy says Daddy only loves money."

Silence.

Then Ethan added the sentence that broke every heart in the room.

"She says... we're just mistakes."

Emma covered her mouth.

Marcus turned away.

Dominic slowly looked back at Victoria.

"You called our children mistakes?"

Victoria folded her arms.

"I was disciplining them."

"No."

Dominic answered.

"You were destroying them."

Two police detectives entered the mansion minutes later.

Victoria smiled.

Finally.

"They'll arrest this maid for kidnapping my children."

Instead, one detective walked straight toward her.

"Mrs. Victoria Blackwell?"

"Yes?"

"We have a warrant regarding multiple counts of child abuse, obstruction of evidence, and financial fraud."

Her face drained of color.

"You can't be serious."

Marcus quietly handed the detective another folder.

"There's more."

The detective opened it.

His eyebrows rose immediately.

"What is this?"

"Bank records."

Victoria turned toward Marcus in disbelief.

"You searched my accounts?"

"No."

Dominic answered.

"I searched mine."

The weekly cash withdrawals.

The secret transfers.

The shell companies.

Every dollar traced.

Every payment connected.

Every trail led toward Damien Cross.

The detective looked up.

"Mrs. Blackwell... would you like to explain why you've transferred nearly two million dollars to companies controlled by Dominic Blackwell's known criminal rival?"

Nobody breathed.

Victoria's mask finally cracked.

For just a second...

Pure hatred filled her eyes.

Then she laughed.

A strange...

Almost relieved laugh.

"You really don't know."

Dominic frowned.

"Know what?"

She smiled through tears.

"I was never working for Damien."

May you like

She leaned closer.

"I was working with someone much worse."
