CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET ROOM

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET ROOM

Dominic did not sleep.

He spent the entire night reviewing every surveillance photograph Marcus had collected over the last twelve months.

Each image added another piece to a puzzle he never realized existed.

Victoria leaving the mansion without security.

Meeting Damien Cross.

Returning hours later with a smile on her face.

Always on Tuesdays.

Always on Fridays.

The exact same days the mansion's cameras mysteriously went offline.

It was too perfect.

Too organized.

This wasn't an affair.

It was an operation.

At sunrise, Dominic finally spoke.

"I want every inch of that house searched."

Marcus nodded.

"Without alerting Victoria?"

"Especially without alerting her."

Within hours, Dominic's private security team entered the estate disguised as internet technicians while Victoria attended a charity luncheon in Manhattan.

Emma answered the front door.

She immediately recognized Marcus.

Her expression changed.

"I know who you are."

Marcus smiled politely.

"Then you know we're not here to fix the Wi-Fi."

Emma glanced upstairs toward the children's rooms.

"They're at school."

"Good."

She stepped aside without another question.

Marcus noticed bruises hidden beneath the sleeve of her uniform.

Fresh ones.

His jaw tightened.

"Did she do that?"

Emma quietly rolled the fabric back down.

"I'm fine."

Marcus didn't argue.

He knew she wasn't.

The search lasted nearly three hours.

Nothing.

Every room appeared immaculate.

Until one technician noticed something unusual inside Dominic's private office.

A bookshelf measured six inches deeper than the wall behind it.

Marcus pushed.

Nothing happened.

He searched the edges.

Hidden beneath the frame was a tiny magnetic switch.

Click.

The shelf slowly opened.

Behind it sat a room Dominic had never seen before.

Marcus froze.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Laptops.

Hard drives.

Dozens of labeled folders.

Almost all carried Dominic's name.

One technician inserted a hard drive into a secure computer.

The first video appeared.

Marcus felt sick.

Footage from inside the nursery.

Years ago.

Baby Lily crying.

Victoria standing beside the crib...

Doing nothing.

Instead, she simply watched the child cry for nearly forty minutes.

Another video.

Three-year-old Ethan spilling juice.

Victoria grabbed his arm so hard he screamed.

Another.

Lily hiding beneath her bed while Victoria counted loudly through the room.

"Come out."

Silence.

"If Daddy loved you..."

Another pause.

"...he would've stayed home."

Marcus slammed the laptop shut.

No one spoke.

One of the security agents quietly wiped tears from his eyes.

Dominic arrived fifteen minutes later.

Marcus handed him the drive without saying a word.

He watched.

Every second.

Every recording.

Hours of hidden abuse.

His face never changed.

That frightened everyone more than if he had started screaming.

When the final video ended, Dominic stood.

"Who installed these cameras?"

"We're tracing the equipment now."

"No."

His voice became ice.

"I want names."

Within minutes another technician answered.

"The purchases were made through shell companies."

Marcus looked closer.

"They all lead back to Damien Cross."

Dominic slowly closed his eyes.

His oldest enemy had cameras inside his home.

Inside his children's bedrooms.

The realization almost made him lose control.

Someone had been watching his family for years.

Emma stood silently near the office door.

She hadn't meant to overhear.

But once she saw the videos...

She couldn't look away.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I tried."

Everyone turned toward her.

Dominic looked at her for the first time since learning who she was.

"You knew."

Emma nodded.

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She laughed bitterly.

"Would you have believed the maid over your wife?"

Dominic couldn't answer.

Emma continued.

"I called child services anonymously."

Nothing happened.

"I reported bruises."

Nothing happened.

"I even wrote you three letters."

Dominic frowned.

"What letters?"

"They disappeared."

Marcus looked toward the house manager.

The elderly woman lowered her head.

"Mrs. Blackwell instructed us to destroy every letter addressed to Mr. Blackwell unless she approved it first."

Dominic felt physically ill.

For six months...

Emma had been trying to reach him.

Every warning had been buried before it ever reached his hands.

Emma's voice trembled.

"I stayed because someone had to."

She looked toward the empty hallway leading to the children's rooms.

"They stopped asking when the hitting would end."

Dominic's breathing became shallow.

"What do they ask now?"

Emma smiled sadly.

"They ask if today will be a good day... or a bad day."

Silence swallowed the room.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression instantly changed.

"What happened?"

A security guard shouted through the speaker.

"Boss—Mrs. Blackwell just left the charity event early."

Marcus looked at Dominic.

"She's coming home."

Dominic slowly reached inside his coat.

Not for a gun.

For his wedding ring.

He stared at it for several seconds.

Then pulled it off.

He placed it carefully on the desk.

"This marriage ends today."

At that exact moment, none of them noticed the small blinking red light hidden inside the secret room.

A final camera.

May you like

Still transmitting.

And hundreds of miles away, Damien Cross smiled as he watched everything unfold live.
