CHAPTER 7 — The Wedding That Never Happened

CHAPTER 7 — The Wedding That Never Happened
Daniel Hart canceled nothing.
Not publicly.
The invitations remained valid.
The cathedral stayed reserved.
The reception ballroom continued preparing for six hundred guests.
Every newspaper still expected the wedding of the year.
That was exactly what Daniel wanted.
Because Marcus had another plan.
"If Isabella thinks the wedding is still happening," he said, "she'll stay."
"And if she stays..."
Daniel finished.
"...she'll make a mistake."
Forty-eight hours before the ceremony, federal investigators quietly began executing sealed warrants.
Bank accounts connected to Victor Sloan were frozen.
Dr. Leonard Hayes' medical license was suspended pending criminal investigation.
The maintenance supervisor who had fled to Argentina was detained during a layover in Miami before ever leaving the United States.
Faced with decades in prison, he agreed to cooperate.
His testimony shattered the conspiracy.
It wasn't just Isabella.
Five executives inside Hart Global had accepted millions in offshore payments.
Their plan had been simple.
Declare Daniel mentally unfit.
Install Isabella as legal guardian after the marriage.
Force the board to approve "temporary" executive control.
Sell valuable company divisions.
Disappear with billions before Daniel could recover.
It had been planned for almost two years.
The morning of the wedding arrived beneath clear summer skies.
Guests filled the cathedral.
Business leaders.
Politicians.
Journalists.
Television cameras waited outside.
Inside the bridal suite, Isabella admired herself in the mirror.
She wore a custom-made ivory gown worth nearly two hundred thousand dollars.
Today she would become Mrs. Daniel Hart.
Her phone vibrated.
Thomas Greene.
"They're here," he whispered.
"Everything normal?"
"So far."
"Keep watching Helena."
Thomas hesitated.
"I've lost her."
"What?"
"Daniel moved her."
Isabella's heartbeat quickened.
"Find her."
Before Thomas could answer, another voice interrupted behind him.
"You won't have to."
Thomas turned.
Three FBI agents stood in the hallway.
One badge.
One warrant.
One sentence.
"Thomas Greene, you're under arrest."
His phone slipped from his hand.
Isabella heard shouting before the call disconnected.
Her smile vanished.

At exactly eleven o'clock, the cathedral doors opened.
Everyone stood.
The music began.
Daniel waited at the altar.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
No one could see the small microphone hidden beneath his tie.
Isabella walked slowly down the aisle.
Every camera flashed.
Every guest smiled.
She reached Daniel.
The minister began.
"Dearly beloved..."
"We are gathered here today—"
"I'm afraid we're not."
The unfamiliar voice echoed through the cathedral.
Every head turned.
Marcus Bennett walked through the center aisle.
Behind him came federal agents.
Chicago detectives.
State prosecutors.
And two uniformed officers carrying evidence boxes.
The minister stepped backward.
Guests gasped.
Daniel calmly removed his microphone.
Then he faced Isabella.
"There won't be a wedding."
Her face drained of color.
"What are you doing?"
"Telling the truth."
Marcus handed the lead prosecutor a folder.
The prosecutor addressed the room.
"Isabella Crane..."
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, attempted financial exploitation, evidence tampering, witness intimidation, and multiple additional felony offenses."
The cathedral exploded into chaos.
Guests stood.
Reporters rushed forward.
Cameras rolled.
Isabella laughed.
Actually laughed.
"This is ridiculous."
"You have nothing."
Marcus nodded toward the giant projection screen that had been prepared for the wedding slideshow.
Instead...
The recovered video appeared.
The secret dinner.
The conspiracy.
Every word.
Every smile.
Every betrayal.
Played before six hundred witnesses.
Isabella slowly turned toward Daniel.
"You planned this."
He answered quietly.
"No."
"You did."
A tiny voice interrupted.
"My bunny doesn't like bad ladies."
Everyone looked.
Olivia stood near the front pew beside Helena, clutching Mr. Ears.
The tension broke for just one second as nervous laughter spread through the room.
Even several officers smiled.
Isabella stared at the little girl.
Real hatred filled her eyes.
Daniel stepped between them instantly.
"You won't come near her again."
Federal agents placed Isabella in handcuffs.
As they led her away, she shouted one final sentence.
"You think you've won?"
Daniel watched silently.
She smiled through tears.
May you like
"You still don't know who really started this."
Those words lingered long after the police cars disappeared.
