CHAPTER 5 — The Trap Before the Wedding

CHAPTER 5 — The Trap Before the Wedding
Daniel didn't sleep that night.
Neither did Marcus.
By dawn, the mansion had quietly transformed into something it had never been before.
Not a home.
A crime scene.
Forensic specialists arrived through the underground garage before sunrise. Every hard drive, security server, and employee access log was copied before the morning staff even poured their first cup of coffee.
Marcus stood over a conference table covered with evidence.
"There are nine unauthorized logins."
Daniel frowned.
"Yesterday you said six."
"There were six on your laptop."
Marcus slid another report across the table.
"Three more came from the mansion's internal financial server."
Daniel scanned the page.
Each login had occurred late at night.
Always after Isabella had visited.
Always when Daniel was traveling.
"What was accessed?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"Your personal trust."
"The family foundation."
"And your revised will."
Daniel looked up.
"I revised my will six months ago."
Marcus nodded.
"Someone opened it forty-three times."
Silence settled over the room.
"They weren't reading it."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"They were studying how to rewrite your future."
Across the mansion, Helena was helping Olivia eat pancakes in the staff kitchen.
The little girl happily stacked blueberries into tiny towers.
"Mama?"
"Yes?"
"Why everybody whispering?"
Helena smiled weakly.
"Because grown-ups think whispering solves problems."
Olivia considered that.
"It doesn't."
"No."
"It usually doesn't."
Before Helena could say another word, Mrs. Whitman—the elderly house manager—hurried inside.
Her face looked unusually tense.
"Helena."
"Mr. Hart would like to see you."
Helena froze.
Her first thought was simple.
I'm being fired.
She kissed Olivia's forehead.
"Stay here with Mrs. Whitman."
"I'll be back."

Daniel was standing by the study window when Helena entered.
He turned immediately.
"I owe you an apology."
She blinked.
"...Sir?"
"You brought your daughter here because you had no choice."
She lowered her eyes.
"I broke the rules."
"You broke a rule."
He paused.
"But you also uncovered a felony."
Helena didn't know how to answer.
Daniel continued.
"If Olivia hadn't wandered into this room..."
"...I'd probably be married by next week."
His voice remained calm.
"But within months I'd lose my company."
"My freedom."
"And perhaps my life."
Helena looked stunned.
"I never meant—"
"I know."
He reached into a drawer.
Pulled out an envelope.
"I'd like to help."
She immediately stepped back.
"I can't accept charity."
"It isn't charity."
"It's compensation."
"For what?"
Daniel looked toward the hallway where Olivia's laughter echoed faintly.
"For the person who accidentally saved mine."
Inside the envelope was enough money to cover two years of daycare.
Helena stared without touching it.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to."
At that exact moment...
Several miles away...
Isabella entered Victor Sloan's private office.
She slammed the door.
"They recovered something."
Victor looked up sharply.
"Who told you?"
"Their behavior."
"They're too calm."
"They know something."
Victor stood.
"Impossible."
"The laptop was destroyed."
"Destroyed isn't erased."
His confidence began to crack.
"What do we do?"
Victor opened a safe.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
Several encrypted flash drives.
"If necessary..."
"...we disappear."
Isabella stared.
"So that's your plan?"
"It's always been the plan."
"And me?"
Victor smiled coldly.
"If things collapse..."
"...everyone protects themselves."
For the first time...
Isabella realized she had never been a partner.
She had only been useful.
That afternoon Marcus received the forensic report he had been waiting for.
One deleted email had been recovered.
It had never reached Daniel.
Someone intercepted it.
The sender...
Dr. Emily Chen.
Daniel's real neurologist.
Marcus opened the attachment.
A medical report.
Only one sentence truly mattered.
Patient Daniel Hart shows no signs of cognitive impairment. Previous allegations appear entirely unfounded.
Marcus immediately called Daniel.
"They buried your clean diagnosis."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"So they replaced it."
"Exactly."
"They didn't fake a disease."
"They erased my health."
Before either man could speak again...
Another call came through.
Marcus answered.
Seconds later his face lost all color.
"What happened?"
The security chief spoke rapidly.
"There was a break-in."
"Where?"
"The evidence storage room."
Marcus's heart nearly stopped.
"The mansion?"
"No."
"Our downtown legal office."
"What was taken?"
A pause.
Then came the answer.
"Nothing."
Marcus frowned.
"Nothing?"
"They failed."
"But..."
The guard swallowed.
"...someone left a message."
"What message?"
Marcus listened.
Slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel waited.
Marcus looked him straight in the eyes.
"They wrote it on the wall."
In red paint.
Four words.
May you like
WE KNOW SHE TALKED.
Helena had.
