CHAPTER 5 — THE BABY WHO DISAPPEARED WITHOUT LEAVING THE ROOM

CHAPTER 5 — THE BABY WHO DISAPPEARED WITHOUT LEAVING THE ROOM

"Code Pink!"

The announcement thundered through Whitestone Medical Center.

Every hallway instantly locked down.

Steel security doors slammed shut.

Elevators froze between floors.

Armed hospital security officers flooded the maternity wing.

Inside Room 814, Emma ripped the IV from her arm before anyone could stop her.

"Mrs. Mercer!" Dr. Rachel Monroe shouted.

"You just had major surgery!"

"My daughter!"

Emma stumbled from the bed, ignoring the searing pain across her abdomen.

Blood stained the hospital gown beneath her coat.

She didn't notice.

She only saw the empty bassinet.

Lily was gone.

Grant heard the Code Pink alarm while arguing with Nolan outside the chapel.

His face turned white.

"No..."

He sprinted toward the maternity floor.

Security tried to stop him.

"Mr. Mercer, you aren't authorized—"

"My daughter has been kidnapped!"

Nobody blocked him after that.

When Grant reached Room 814, he found chaos.

Doctors.

Police.

Nurses.

Federal agents from the hospital's child-abduction task force.

Emma stood barefoot in the center of the room, trembling with rage.

The moment she saw Grant, every emotion exploded.

"You did this!"

Grant stopped as if struck.

"What?"

"You brought these people into our lives!"

"I swear to God—"

"Don't."

Her voice was ice.

"Don't you dare swear on anything that belongs to our daughter."

Grant looked into the empty crib.

The tiny pink blanket remained.

Nothing else.

His knees nearly gave way.

Chief of Hospital Security Marcus Hale stepped inside.

"Everyone stop talking."

The room fell silent.

Marcus held a tablet connected to the hospital's surveillance system.

"We've reviewed every camera."

Emma stepped forward.

"Where is she?"

Marcus frowned.

"That's the problem."

"What problem?"

"No one entered this room."

Emma stared.

"What?"

"No nurse."

"No doctor."

"No visitor."

"No kidnapper."

Grant looked at the empty bassinet.

"Then how did my daughter disappear?"

Marcus slowly zoomed in on the footage.

Room 814.

Every second.

Every angle.

Emma sleeping.

Lily resting beside her.

Dr. Monroe leaving.

The lights flickering during the blackout.

Then...

Static.

Exactly seven seconds.

When the picture returned...

The bassinet was empty.

Only seven seconds.

No doors opened.

No windows moved.

Nothing.

"Play it again."

Emma refused to blink.

Again.

Seven seconds.

Again.

Nothing.

Again.

Still impossible.

Grant whispered,

"Someone erased the footage."

Marcus nodded.

"Professionally."

Nolan quietly asked,

"Can it be recovered?"

Marcus looked grim.

"Only someone with administrator access could overwrite hospital security."

Everyone instinctively looked toward hospital administration.

Then toward one another.

Who inside Whitestone Medical Center could disable every security system...

For exactly seven seconds?

Meanwhile...

Three miles away...

Inside an abandoned church awaiting renovation...

A tiny newborn slept peacefully.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't frightened.

She lay inside an expensive portable incubator.

Someone gently adjusted the blanket around her.

A female voice whispered softly,

"I'm sorry, little one."

"You need to disappear..."

"...before they kill you."

Back at the hospital...

Detective Sarah Donovan from Chicago Major Crimes arrived.

She had investigated corporate kidnappings before.

Never one involving billionaires.

Never one involving a newborn less than six hours old.

She listened carefully as Marcus explained the missing footage.

Then she asked one question.

"Who benefits from this child disappearing?"

The room became painfully quiet.

Nolan answered first.

"The Mercer Family Trust."

Sarah looked up.

"Explain."

Nolan opened the trust agreement.

"If Lily dies before inheritance rights are formally registered..."

Grant interrupted.

"The line of succession changes."

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

"To whom?"

Silence.

Then Nolan answered.

"The next surviving Mercer heir."

Grant whispered,

"My cousin."

Emma frowned.

"Grant has a cousin?"

"You've never met him."

Grant looked sick.

"He lives in Switzerland."

Nolan corrected him.

"He lived in Switzerland."

Everyone turned.

"He returned to Chicago three weeks ago."

Emma felt a chill.

"Why wasn't I told?"

Grant stared blankly.

"Because I didn't know."

The conference room doors burst open.

An exhausted investigator hurried inside carrying a sealed evidence bag.

"We found this."

Inside lay a tiny silver bracelet.

Lily's hospital identification tag.

But attached to it...

Was something else.

A folded piece of paper.

Emma unfolded it with shaking hands.

Only five handwritten words appeared.

This isn't about your daughter.

Beneath them...

Another sentence.

It's about what she inherited.

Emma looked toward Eleanor.

The elderly woman had remained strangely calm throughout the crisis.

Too calm.

"Eleanor..."

The old matriarch slowly nodded.

"I hoped they wouldn't move this quickly."

Emma's heartbeat accelerated.

"What did Lily inherit?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Not money."

Grant looked confused.

"Then what?"

Eleanor answered quietly.

"A list."

"A list of what?"

Eleanor looked toward the locked door before speaking.

"Thirty-seven names."

Grant frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You weren't meant to."

She inhaled slowly.

"Thirty years ago, your grandfather discovered that dozens of Chicago officials, judges, developers, and financiers had secretly manipulated land acquisitions across the city."

Nolan's expression changed immediately.

"The Hawthorne Files..."

Eleanor nodded.

"Your grandfather collected everything."

"Bank transfers."

"Hidden ownership."

"Political bribery."

"Murders disguised as accidents."

Emma whispered,

"He kept proof?"

"Enough to destroy half the city's elite."

Grant stared.

"Where are those files?"

Eleanor looked toward the empty bassinet.

"They've been hidden for decades."

Emma frowned.

"What does that have to do with Lily?"

May you like

The elderly woman answered with heartbreaking honesty.

"Everything."
