CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN OUTSIDE THE GLASS

CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN OUTSIDE THE GLASS
Grant Mercer had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without breaking a sweat.
He had stared down hostile investors, union strikes, lawsuits, and economic crashes.
Yet nothing in forty-one years had prepared him for standing outside a locked maternity ward while a nurse quietly closed the blinds between him and his wife.
The tiny movement hurt more than any boardroom defeat.
His daughter had entered the world.
And he wasn't allowed to meet her.
The hallway smelled of antiseptic and fresh paint.
Grant remained frozen, one hand still pressed against the glass.
Inside, Emma cradled their newborn.
She never looked back.
Not again.
"Sir."
Grant turned sharply.
Hospital security stood several feet away.
The older officer spoke carefully.
"We need you to step away from the recovery area."
"My wife is in there."
"You are no longer listed as her approved visitor."
"I'm her husband."
The officer hesitated.
"Legally... yes."
Another pause.
"But according to hospital records, Mrs. Mercer revoked your medical authorization thirty-eight minutes ago."
Grant laughed bitterly.
"This is insane."
"No, sir."
The officer's voice remained calm.
"This is documented."
Grant looked toward Nolan Brooks.
"You arranged this."
Nolan adjusted his glasses.
"No."
"You did."
"I simply followed your grandfather's instructions."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"My grandfather has been dead for twelve years."
"His trust hasn't."

Three floors below...
The gala had completely collapsed.
Guests no longer discussed charity.
They discussed scandal.
Clusters of Chicago's wealthiest families whispered beside champagne towers.
Everyone had seen security escort Ava Carlisle through the ballroom.
Everyone had watched Grant receive legal papers instead of applause.
Cell phones buzzed nonstop.
Headlines were already appearing online.
MERCER HEIR REMOVED FROM FAMILY TRUST DURING WIFE'S EMERGENCY SURGERY.
BILLIONAIRE'S CHARITY GALA ENDS IN PUBLIC HUMILIATION.
WHO REALLY CONTROLS MERCER DEVELOPMENT NOW?
Within twenty minutes...
Mercer Development stock began sliding in overseas trading.
Ava wasn't crying anymore.
She was furious.
She paced outside the hospital entrance while speaking into her phone.
"This wasn't supposed to happen."
The voice on the other end remained calm.
"You underestimated Emma."
"I underestimated an emotional pregnant woman."
"No."
A long silence.
"You underestimated Eleanor Hawthorne."
Ava stopped walking.
Grant's grandmother.
The founder of the Hawthorne Clause.
The woman who had built the Mercer fortune before marrying into it.
Everyone assumed the clause was symbolic.
Apparently...
It wasn't.
Meanwhile...
Emma drifted in and out of consciousness.
Pain medication blurred the room.
Her daughter slept peacefully against her chest.
Tiny fingers.
Dark hair.
Grant's eyes.
Emma smiled despite herself.
"Hello, Lily."
The baby's eyelids fluttered.
"So you're finally here."
Tears rolled silently across Emma's cheeks.
"You deserved two parents waiting for you."
A soft knock interrupted her.
Dr. Rachel Monroe entered.
"How are you feeling?"
"Sore."
"Emotionally?"
Emma managed a weak laugh.
"Worse."
Rachel nodded.
"I expected that."
She checked the baby's heartbeat.
"She's healthy."
Emma closed her eyes.
"That's all that matters."
Rachel hesitated.
"No."
Emma looked up.
"You matter too."
An hour later...
Nolan entered carrying another folder.
Much thicker than the first.
Emma frowned.
"What now?"
"The board met."
"So?"
"They voted."
Emma wasn't interested.
"I asked for time."
"You don't have time."
Nolan laid the folder on her bed.
"Mercer Development is under attack."
Emma blinked.
"What?"
"Someone is buying enormous amounts of company stock."
Her exhaustion vanished instantly.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
"How much?"
"Enough to attempt a hostile takeover."
Emma stared.
"The market opened less than an hour ago."
"They were already prepared."
Nolan's expression darkened.
"This began before tonight."
Emma's pulse quickened.
"You think someone knew?"
"I know someone knew."
He slid several financial reports toward her.
"The purchases started six weeks ago."
Emma read silently.
Anonymous shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
Layer after layer of hidden ownership.
Professional.
Carefully concealed.
Someone had been waiting.
Waiting for Mercer leadership to collapse.
Waiting for Grant to make one catastrophic mistake.
Tonight...
He had delivered it.
Emma looked toward the sleeping baby.
Then back at Nolan.
"If Grant loses control..."
"The company falls."
"The employees?"
"Nearly forty thousand jobs become uncertain."
Emma whispered,
"My father worked thirty years building those projects."
"I know."
"My grandfather-in-law trusted this family."
"I know."
Emma's voice hardened.
"I won't let strangers destroy it."
Nolan finally smiled.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
At that exact moment...
Across downtown Chicago...
Inside the seventy-second floor of Blackridge Tower...
A man watched financial markets on twelve enormous monitors.
Victor Lang.
Founder of Lang Capital.
Grant's oldest rival.
His assistant entered quietly.
"Everything is proceeding."
Victor nodded.
"And Mrs. Mercer?"
"She now controls temporary voting authority."
Victor smiled slowly.
"Excellent."
The assistant frowned.
"I thought we wanted Grant removed."
"We do."
"Then why does Emma becoming stronger help us?"
Victor walked toward the window overlooking Chicago.
"Because grief creates distraction."
He lifted a crystal glass.
"While husband and wife destroy each other..."
He smiled.
"...we buy the kingdom."

Back at Whitestone Medical Center...
Grant refused to leave.
Hour after hour...
He remained outside the maternity ward.
Ignoring reporters.
Ignoring lawyers.
Ignoring twenty-three missed calls from board members.
At nearly noon...
An elderly janitor quietly stopped beside him.
"You know..."
Grant barely reacted.
"I've worked here twenty-six years."
The janitor continued mopping.
"I've seen rich fathers."
Another stroke.
"Poor fathers."
Another.
"Teenage fathers."
He looked at Grant.
"They all make the same mistake."
Grant finally spoke.
"What mistake?"
"They think becoming a father happens when the baby is born."
The old man shook his head.
"It happens every day before that."
Grant swallowed hard.
"You were supposed to be there long before tonight."
The janitor walked away.
Leaving Grant completely alone with the truth.
Inside Room 814...
Emma watched Lily sleeping peacefully.
For the first time since labor began...
Silence filled the room.
Then her phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
No name.
Only a photograph.
Emma's heart nearly stopped.
The picture showed Grant...
Standing beside Ava...
Kissing her...
Not last week.
Not last month.
The timestamp in the corner read...
THREE YEARS AGO.
Before their marriage.
Before the engagement.
Before everything.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.
"Your husband didn't betray you after the wedding... he was lying before it ever began."
Emma's hands began trembling.
Then a second message appeared.
"If you really want the truth... don't trust Nolan Brooks."
The room suddenly felt ice cold.
Outside...
A thunderstorm rolled over Chicago.
May you like
And without realizing it...
Emma had just stepped into a conspiracy far larger than an affair.
