CHAPTER 7 – THE TRAITOR IN THE HOUSE

CHAPTER 7 – THE TRAITOR IN THE HOUSE
Darkness swallowed the estate.
For one heartbeat, no one moved.
Then years of instinct took over.
Dae reached for Amara with one hand and drew the pistol concealed beneath the table with the other.
"Stay behind me."
The emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the corridors in deep crimson.
Joon's voice echoed through the security radios.
"Backup generators are offline!"
"They were sabotaged from inside!"
Every guard immediately understood what that meant.
The enemy hadn't broken into the fortress.
The enemy had been living inside it.
Dae escorted Amara toward the panic room.
Before they reached the door, Hana appeared in the hallway.
She had awakened during the blackout.
"Daddy?"
She sounded frightened.
He scooped her into his arms.
Seconds later Haru came running barefoot, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"I had a scary dream."
"You don't have to be afraid anymore," Dae said quietly.
"I'm here."
For the first time in years, he meant those words completely.
Meanwhile...
Joon sprinted toward the surveillance center.
The door stood open.
Inside, three technicians lay unconscious.
The central server had been wiped clean.
Only one monitor remained active.
On it appeared a single name.
Daniel Cho.
Joon froze.
Impossible.
Daniel had joined Dae's organization ten years earlier.
He had risen from a young accountant to Chief of Operations.
He managed finances.
Security.
Personnel.
Even the search for Amara after she disappeared.
Which meant...
He had controlled every lead.
Every false report.
Every dead end.
He had made sure Dae never found her.
A slow clap echoed from behind.
Joon spun.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
Perfect suit.
Perfect smile.
A pistol fitted with a suppressor.
"I was wondering how long it would take."
"You betrayed him."
Daniel shrugged.
"I chose survival."
"You sold children."
"I protected the winning side."
He fired.
Joon dove behind the console as bullets shattered glass.
Elsewhere in the estate...
Dae received a message on his encrypted phone.
Only six words.
Roof. Come alone. End everything.
He looked toward Amara.
She already knew.
"It's him."
Dae nodded.
"If I don't go..."
"He'll keep hunting us."
She stepped closer.
"I lost you once."
"I'm not losing you again."
He gently touched her face.
"You won't."
Then he kissed her.
Not the desperate kiss of lovers reunited.
The quiet promise of two people who had survived impossible years.
Hana peeked around the doorway.
"Eww."
Haru giggled.
"You kissed Mommy."
For the first time that day...
Amara laughed.
"So he does smile," Haru whispered proudly.
The rooftop was silent except for the ocean wind.
Daniel stood near the helipad.
Behind him waited a helicopter with its engine running.
"I always admired you," Daniel said.
"You built an empire."
"You inspired loyalty."
"You just trusted the wrong man."
Dae walked forward alone.
"Why?"
Daniel laughed softly.
"Money?"
"Power?"
"No."
"You remember your father?"
Dae's expression hardened.
"My father died twenty years ago."
"Not before ordering my father's execution."
The words landed like thunder.
Daniel's eyes burned with hatred.
"Our fathers built the old syndicate together."
"When yours decided he wanted everything..."
"He murdered everyone who stood beside him."
"I was twelve."
"I watched."
"You inherited the empire."
"I inherited revenge."
Dae stood motionless.
"I never knew."
"I know."
"You were just a child."
"But revenge doesn't care about innocence."
Daniel smiled bitterly.
"So I waited."
"I became your most trusted man."
"I stole your future."
"I took Amara."
"I watched you destroy yourself looking for her."
"And today..."
He raised his pistol.
"...I'll finish the story."
He pulled the trigger.
Click.
Nothing.
Daniel frowned.
Behind him came the unmistakable sound of dozens of rifles being cocked.
He turned slowly.
Joon emerged from the stairwell, blood running down one side of his face.
Behind him stood nearly every surviving member of Dae's security force.
Joon smiled.
"You always were good with computers."
"But terrible with magazines."
Daniel looked down.
His pistol magazine was empty.
During their struggle, Joon had removed it without him noticing.
For the first time in ten years...
Daniel looked afraid.
He laughed once.
"So this is how it ends."
"No," Dae answered.
"This ends in court."
"You'll tell every truth."
Daniel reached into his pocket.
Joon shouted.
"Boss!"
Too late.
Daniel bit down on a hidden poison capsule.
Within seconds...
He collapsed.
His final words were barely audible.
May you like
"I still... won..."
Then he was gone.
