Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Thomas barely slept.

Rachel's letter remained on the nightstand beside him, folded with unnatural precision. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same sentence.

There are things Diana must never control.

At six-thirty in the morning, he called the number written at the bottom of the letter.

The line rang twice.

"Michael Bennett."

Thomas sat upright.

"Michael. It's Thomas Hargrove."

Silence.

Then a slow exhale.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

Thomas's grip tightened on the phone.

"You knew about the letter."

"I knew Rachel left one."

"And you never told me?"

"She made me promise."

Thomas stared out the window at the gray morning sky.

"Start talking."

Another pause.

Then Michael spoke carefully.

"Rachel created a secondary trust six months before she died."

Thomas frowned.

"A secondary trust?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

"For your sons."

Thomas felt confusion replace anger.

"The main trust already provides for them."

"I know."

"Then why create another one?"

Michael hesitated.

And that hesitation frightened Thomas more than any answer.

"Because Rachel believed someone might eventually try to use their condition."

The room seemed to tilt.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Rachel worried that if Callum and Eli never fully recovered, someone might argue they were incapable of managing future assets."

Thomas went cold.

"Diana."

Michael said nothing.

He didn't need to.

The silence was answer enough.

Rachel had seen it coming.

Years ago.

Long before the accident.

Long before the wheelchairs.

Long before vulnerability entered the equation.

She had seen a possibility nobody else wanted to imagine.

And she had prepared for it.

"Where is the trust now?" Thomas asked.

"Protected."

"By whom?"

"You."

Thomas blinked.

"What?"

"The final authorization belongs to you."

"I've never signed anything."

"You did."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

Thomas closed his eyes.

Rachel.

Of course.

Rachel had placed documents in front of him dozens of times.

Estate plans.

Legal updates.

Business structures.

He had signed because he trusted her.

Because she always handled the details.

And because he had never imagined he might someday need them.

Now he did.

"Who else knows?"

"Rachel."

"She's dead."

"I know."

"Who else?"

Another pause.

Then Michael said something unexpected.

"Marisol."

Thomas nearly dropped the phone.

"What?"

"Rachel met her."

The words made no sense.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Michael sounded certain.

"Marisol worked at Saint Vincent's Hospital during college."

Thomas's mind raced.

The rehabilitation center.

The months after Rachel's cancer treatments.

The hospital visits.

The overlapping timelines.

"Rachel knew her?"

"Very well."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Why has nobody told me this?"

"Because Rachel asked us not to."

The silence that followed felt enormous.

For the first time, Thomas realized Marisol's appearance in their lives might not have been an accident at all.

Maybe Rachel had seen something in her.

Something worth trusting.

May you like

Something worth protecting.

And suddenly Diana's determination to remove her looked even more suspicious.
