Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Dinner that evening was unusually quiet.

The twins barely touched their food.

Diana remained composed.

Marisol did not appear at all.

Thomas sat at the head of the table replaying the afternoon in his mind.

Trust documents.

Rachel's office.

The accusation made no sense.

Yet neither did Diana's reaction.

After dessert, he excused himself.

Then he walked directly toward the east wing.

Toward a room he had not entered in almost a year.

Rachel's office.

The door opened with a familiar creak.

Nothing appeared different.

The shelves remained perfectly organized.

The photographs remained exactly where she had left them.

The scent of old books lingered in the air.

For a moment, grief caught him off guard.

Rachel had always known how to fill a room.

Even in her absence.

Thomas crossed to her desk.

He sat down.

Opened the top drawer.

Then froze.

The folders were wrong.

Most people would never have noticed.

He did.

Rachel had been meticulous.

Everything had a place.

Everything followed a system.

Now several files sat slightly out of order.

Just enough to matter.

His stomach tightened.

Slowly, he opened the lower cabinet.

Inside sat a small lockbox.

Still locked.

Still untouched.

At least apparently.

Then he noticed something else.

A folded piece of paper tucked beneath the box.

He pulled it free.

His name was written across the front.

Thomas.

His pulse quickened.

He unfolded the note.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Rachel's.

If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped never would.

He sat down heavily.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

The letter continued.

There are things about the family finances that Diana does not know. There are also things she must never control.

Thomas stared at the page.

The words blurred for a moment.

Then sharpened again.

Rachel had written the letter only weeks before her death.

And somehow nobody had ever found it.

Nobody except him.

He continued reading.

If Diana ever attempts to gain authority over the trust, speak to Michael Bennett immediately. He knows everything.

A name.

A warning.

A secret.

Thomas looked toward the dark window.

His reflection stared back.

For years he had believed the difficult chapter of his life began with the accident.

Now he wasn't so sure.

Because another story had been unfolding beneath the surface.

One his wife had apparently seen coming long before anyone else.

Downstairs, somewhere in the house, a door quietly closed.

Thomas folded the letter.

His thoughts returned to Marisol.

The young woman everyone seemed determined either to protect or remove.

The young woman who had refused to stay silent.

And suddenly he understood why his sons trusted her.

She wasn't fearless.

He had seen the fear in her eyes.

She simply told the truth anyway.

Outside, thunder rolled across the distant sky.

May you like

A storm was approaching.

And for the first time, Thomas suspected it had been approaching for years.
