CHAPTER 7 — The Chase That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 7 — The Chase That Changed Everything

The festival command center erupted into controlled chaos.

Police officers crowded around the surveillance monitors.

Marcus stared at the frozen frame.

Even beneath the baseball cap and oversized sunglasses, there was no doubt.

Vanessa.

Holding Lily's hand.

Walking calmly toward the south parking lot.

The timestamp read 2:17 p.m.

Only six minutes had passed.

"Zoom in," Marcus ordered.

The technician enhanced the footage.

Lily wasn't walking willingly.

She was clutching Peanut with one hand while Vanessa gripped her wrist tightly with the other.

Marcus felt physically sick.

"Can you track the vehicle?"

Another officer answered immediately.

"A traffic camera picked up a black rental SUV leaving the park."

The screen switched.

License plate confirmed.

The same rental company.

The same vehicle that had been parked outside Marcus's estate every evening.

The police chief grabbed his radio.

"Statewide BOLO."

"Possible child abduction."

"Suspect: Vanessa Cole."

"Victim: Lily Hale, female, age three."

Every available patrol car began moving.

Clara stood frozen.

"I should have held her hand."

Marcus turned sharply.

"Stop."

She looked at him through tears.

"I failed her."

"No."

His voice shook with emotion.

"The only person who failed Lily today is the woman who took her."

He squeezed Clara's shoulder.

"We're bringing her home."

Forty miles away, Lily sat quietly in the back seat of the SUV.

She hugged Peanut tightly.

"Miss Vanessa..."

Vanessa kept her eyes on the highway.

"What?"

"I want Cece."

"You'll see her later."

"I want Uncle Marcus."

"You don't need them."

Lily frowned.

"But they need me."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"They'll survive."

Lily looked out the window.

"My daddy said people who tell lies get lonely."

Vanessa's grip tightened around the steering wheel.

"Your daddy isn't here anymore."

The little girl became silent.

Then she whispered almost to herself,

"Uncle Marcus is."

Vanessa drove toward an isolated lake house owned by an old college friend.

She had convinced herself she wasn't kidnapping Lily.

She was "protecting" her future.

If Marcus believed Clara had been careless...

If public opinion blamed the household staff...

Maybe everything could still be repaired.

Maybe Marcus would need Vanessa again.

The plan made sense only inside her own unraveling mind.

Meanwhile, Marcus's phone rang.

Richard Bennett.

"Marcus, listen carefully."

"What?"

"I've been reviewing Vanessa's recent financial records."

Marcus gripped the phone tighter.

"She withdrew nearly two hundred thousand dollars yesterday."

"So?"

"She also rented a property in Sussex County under a false name."

Marcus's eyes widened.

"Send the address."

Seconds later his phone vibrated.

Marcus handed it to the police chief.

"I think that's where she's going."

Twenty-three patrol cars.

One police helicopter.

Two county sheriff units.

They all converged on the small lake community.

The helicopter pilot spotted the SUV first.

"Target located."

Vanessa saw flashing lights in her rearview mirror.

"No..."

She pressed the accelerator.

The SUV surged forward.

Lily screamed.

"Stop!"

Police vehicles closed in from both sides.

The narrow road curved around the lake.

Vanessa lost control.

The SUV skidded across wet pavement.

Marcus watched from another vehicle only seconds behind.

"Vanessa!"

The SUV slammed into a wooden guardrail.

Glass exploded.

The vehicle spun once before coming to rest.

Marcus was already running before it fully stopped.

He reached the back door.

"Lily!"

She was crying.

"I'm here!"

His hands shook violently as he pulled the door open.

The child threw herself into his arms.

He held her so tightly he thought he might never let go.

"I'm sorry," Lily sobbed.

Marcus broke down.

"No."

"No, sweetheart."

"You never have to apologize."

"Never."

Behind them, officers arrested Vanessa.

She didn't resist.

She only stared at Marcus holding Lily.

Then at Clara, who had arrived moments later.

"You stole everything from me," Vanessa whispered.

Clara answered quietly,

May you like

"No."

"You threw it away."
