CHAPTER 3 — The Ring Came Off, But the Masks Fell First

CHAPTER 3 — The Ring Came Off, But the Masks Fell First

Vanessa did not move.

For nearly thirty seconds, she simply stood in the center of the marble kitchen, staring at Marcus as though waiting for him to laugh and admit the entire conversation had been an elaborate overreaction.

Instead, Marcus walked to the cabinet, removed two crystal glasses, poured himself a glass of water, and drank it in complete silence.

No anger.

No shouting.

No dramatic gestures.

That frightened Vanessa far more than if he had yelled.

"Marcus."

He set the glass down.

"You need to leave tonight."

"You can't throw me out."

"I can."

"This is my home."

"No."

His eyes met hers.

"It was going to become your home."

The distinction landed like a slap.

Vanessa's face hardened.

"So that's it?"

"I embarrassed myself for one minute in a children's boutique, and suddenly I'm the villain?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"You embarrassed yourself long before the boutique."

Upstairs, Clara had no idea the conversation was still unfolding.

She sat beside Lily's bed, humming softly while the little girl slept with Peanut tucked beneath one arm and the stuffed fox beneath the other.

Lily's face had finally relaxed.

But every few minutes she still whispered in her sleep.

"I'm sorry..."

"I'm sorry..."

Clara wiped another tear from her own cheek.

Children apologized for things adults had done to them.

She hated that.

Downstairs, Vanessa's voice became sharper.

"You've changed."

Marcus gave a tired smile.

"No."

"I finally noticed."

"Noticed what?"

"The way you speak to people."

She laughed.

"Oh please."

"You think Clara is some kind of saint?"

"I think Clara has spent four years protecting people who never noticed how much she carried."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"She's staff."

Marcus looked almost offended.

"She's family."

The room fell silent.

Vanessa blinked.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

"She works for you."

"Yes."

"And she has loved Lily without asking for anything in return."

He paused.

"That's more than I can say for everyone."

The front door opened.

Marcus's executive assistant, Daniel Brooks, stepped inside carrying a leather briefcase.

He froze.

"I... should come back."

"No," Marcus said.

"Come in."

Daniel walked carefully into the kitchen.

"I have the fraud investigation."

Vanessa straightened immediately.

"See?"

She looked triumphantly toward Marcus.

"I told you the card issue wasn't my fault."

Daniel hesitated.

"There is... another issue."

Marcus frowned.

"What issue?"

Daniel opened the folder.

"Our cybersecurity team traced the attempted access."

Marcus expected hackers.

Organized crime.

Identity theft.

Instead Daniel quietly slid several printed pages across the counter.

"The login requests originated from inside your residence."

The kitchen became perfectly still.

Marcus slowly looked up.

"Inside this house?"

"Yes."

Daniel nodded.

"Someone used your home Wi-Fi at 4:18 this morning."

Vanessa laughed.

"So?"

Daniel continued.

"The device attempted to access your private financial dashboard six times."

Marcus's expression darkened.

"Was anything stolen?"

"No."

"The system locked every account automatically."

Vanessa shrugged.

"So whoever it was failed."

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"There is more."

Marcus gestured.

"Go on."

"The login device was identified."

He pushed forward another page.

Marcus stared at it.

His face slowly lost all expression.

Vanessa leaned over.

Then immediately looked away.

The registered device name filled the center of the report.

Vanessa-iPhone-16-Pro

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Finally Vanessa laughed.

"A glitch."

Daniel answered carefully.

"Our cybersecurity consultants confirmed it three separate times."

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"Explain."

She shook her head immediately.

"I can't."

"You can."

"I've never even opened your banking app."

Daniel quietly added,

"The login used your birthday."

Marcus closed his eyes.

His birthday.

Vanessa had known it.

Very few others did.

"What exactly were you trying to do?"

"I wasn't!"

Marcus picked up the report.

"It says there were repeated password attempts."

"I don't understand computers."

Daniel spoke gently.

"The attempts were manual."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You actually think I'd steal from you?"

Marcus answered without raising his voice.

"I don't know what to think anymore."

Clara entered halfway through the conversation carrying Lily's empty milk bottle.

She immediately sensed the tension.

Daniel nodded politely.

"Good evening."

She nodded back.

Marcus held up the report.

"Clara."

She stopped.

"Did anyone use my office this morning?"

"No."

"Anyone besides staff?"

She thought carefully.

"Only Vanessa."

Vanessa spun around.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Clara frowned.

"You asked Mrs. Collins for the office key."

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"When?"

"This morning."

"I forgot my lipstick."

Clara blinked.

"In my office?"

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Pull the security footage."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"Marcus..."

"Now."

Twenty minutes later they stood together in the home's security room.

The footage appeared on the large monitor.

7:11 a.m.

Vanessa entered Marcus's private office.

She looked behind her.

Closed the door.

Walked directly toward his desk.

Sat in his chair.

Unlocked her phone.

Reached toward his laptop.

Everyone watched in silence.

There was no audio.

There didn't need to be.

For nearly nine minutes Vanessa remained inside.

Then she quickly exited.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Vanessa one last time.

"You lied."

She swallowed.

"It isn't what you think."

"I don't care what explanation comes next."

He removed the engagement ring from his pocket.

Placed it gently on the desk between them.

"We're finished."

Vanessa stared at the ring.

Then at Marcus.

Then at Clara.

The hatred in her eyes settled entirely on one person.

"You."

She pointed directly at Clara.

"You ruined everything."

Clara answered quietly.

May you like

"No."

"You did."
