CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Behind the Fortune

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Behind the Fortune

Nathan's phone rang again.

This time it wasn't a banker.

It was the Chairman of his Board.

He answered immediately.

"Richard..."

He listened.

His face lost what little color remained.

"No."

He whispered.

"You can't hold a vote tonight."

Another pause.

"No... don't do this."

The call ended.

Nathan lowered the phone slowly.

His hands were shaking.

Arthur spoke first.

"The board?"

Nathan couldn't answer.

Margaret checked her own messages.

Then she looked up.

"They've scheduled an emergency meeting."

Tonight.

Immediately.

Nathan looked desperately toward the investors.

"You all know me."

"We've worked together for years."

No one answered.

Not because they hated him.

Because trust had become expensive.

And Nathan had just spent all of it.

Daniel Mercer quietly pushed his acquisition folder closed.

"I think..."

he said carefully,

"...our companies should postpone tonight's signing."

Nathan's head snapped upward.

"Daniel."

"I can explain."

Daniel sighed.

"I'm sure you can."

"But before I buy a company..."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"...I'd like to know who actually built it."

The sentence hit Nathan harder than any slap.

Across the room, Clara stood frozen.

She had imagined many endings to this evening.

A promotion.

A public announcement.

Perhaps even Nathan finally admitting their relationship.

Instead...

People were avoiding her eyes.

Executives who had laughed with her an hour earlier now stepped away as though embarrassment were contagious.

One woman quietly whispered to another,

"She struck the Chair of Hartwell."

The words spread table by table.

Like fire through dry grass.

Clara hurried toward Nathan.

"Say something."

"You have to fix this."

Nathan didn't even look at her.

His mind had already moved beyond Clara.

He finally understood.

She had never been the problem.

She had merely exposed one.

Evelyn picked up her handbag.

She was ready to leave.

Nathan rushed in front of her.

"Please."

The room fell silent again.

It was the first time anyone had ever heard Nathan Grant say that word to his wife.

"Please..."

"I made mistakes."

"I'll fire Clara."

"I'll resign if that's what you want."

"I'll do anything."

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

Then she smiled.

Not with satisfaction.

With sadness.

"You still don't understand."

Nathan's voice cracked.

"What don't I understand?"

"You think this ended because she slapped me."

Evelyn gently touched the fading mark on her cheek.

"This..."

"...was only the first bruise everyone else could see."

She lowered her hand.

"You've been striking this marriage for years."

"With lies."

"With disrespect."

"With arrogance."

"And every time..."

"...I convinced myself love was patient enough to survive another blow."

Tears gathered in Nathan's eyes.

Too late.

Evelyn removed her wedding ring.

The simple platinum band caught the candlelight.

She placed it beside his untouched wine glass.

"I protected your company..."

she said softly.

"...because I believed one day you'd remember how to protect your family."

She stepped around him.

"But tonight..."

"...you chose your image over your wife."

Nathan reached for her hand.

She moved away before he could touch it.

"You've spent ten years building an empire."

She looked back one final time.

"I spent ten years making sure it didn't collapse."

A single tear escaped Nathan's eye.

He did not wipe it away.

Because he finally understood the terrible truth.

He hadn't lost his fortune first.

He had lost the only person who ever kept it standing.

May you like

And by morning...

The board would decide whether Nathan Grant still deserved to lead the empire that had never truly been his alone.
