CHAPTER 4 — One Return Slap

CHAPTER 4 — One Return Slap

Nathan's voice barely existed.

"...What have you done?"

Clara looked around proudly.

"What?"

"She needed to learn some respect."

Nathan wasn't looking at Clara anymore.

He was looking only at Evelyn.

He had seen that expression once before.

Ten years earlier.

The day Evelyn quietly withdrew from negotiations with a billionaire who had mocked one of her analysts.

Three weeks later...

...that billionaire had lost financing from every major private fund in the country.

Not through revenge.

Through consequences.

Nathan suddenly remembered.

Evelyn stood.

Slowly.

Gracefully.

She smoothed the front of her black dress.

Adjusted one pearl earring.

Looked first at the investors.

Then at Nathan.

Only then...

...did she face Clara.

Clara folded her arms.

"Well?"

"What are you going to do?"

"Complain?"

"Cry?"

"Run home?"

Evelyn spoke for the first time since being struck.

"No."

One word.

Perfectly calm.

Then—

Her hand moved.

Not wildly.

Not emotionally.

Almost elegantly.

The slap landed with surgical precision.

Crack!

Clara staggered backward.

Her chair tipped over behind her.

A crystal glass shattered beside her heels.

One side of her face immediately reddened.

She stared at Evelyn in disbelief.

"You..."

Evelyn lowered her hand.

"We're even."

Nathan slammed both palms against the table.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Evelyn turned toward him.

"No."

She paused.

"But you may have."

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

She looked around the room.

"...you've spent ten years convincing people I was decoration."

Every eye followed her.

"You introduced me tonight as though I had nothing to contribute."

Nathan whispered.

"Evelyn..."

"You allowed another woman to insult me."

His silence answered.

"You watched her walk across this room."

Silence.

"You watched her raise her hand."

More silence.

"And even after she struck me..."

Evelyn's voice remained perfectly steady.

"...your first instinct was to protect her."

Nobody at the table could deny it.

They had all seen it.

Arthur Beaumont quietly removed his glasses.

Margaret Lin folded her hands.

The CEO who had planned this acquisition suddenly wished he were somewhere else.

Because this was no longer a marital argument.

This had become corporate history.

Evelyn looked directly at Clara.

"You wanted everyone here to know who really belongs beside Nathan."

Clara swallowed.

"You've made that very clear."

Then Evelyn turned toward the investors.

"My apologies."

Her voice carried effortlessly across the room.

"I should introduce myself properly."

Nathan took one desperate step forward.

"Evelyn... don't."

She ignored him.

"My name is Evelyn Hartwell Grant."

Several guests straightened immediately.

"I serve as Chair of the Hartwell Private Investment Committee."

Half the room froze.

"I authorized every emergency credit extension that kept Grant Technologies alive during its liquidity crisis."

Silence.

"I personally blocked two hostile takeovers."

More silence.

"I negotiated the bridge financing that funded tonight's acquisition."

Arthur slowly closed his eyes.

He had suspected.

He had hoped he was wrong.

Nathan looked like a man watching the floor disappear beneath him.

Then Evelyn delivered the sentence that shattered the evening.

"As of six o'clock this evening..."

She glanced at her watch.

"...Hartwell Trust has suspended every pending financial commitment to Grant Technologies."

Someone dropped a fork.

Another investor whispered,

"My God..."

Nathan's lips parted.

"You... what?"

Evelyn met his terrified eyes.

"You asked whether I came tonight as your wife..."

She gave him the faintest smile.

"I came as your last investor."

May you like

"And you just lost me."

The silence that followed was louder than the slap itself.
