Chapter 7 - Lila’s Choice

The week passed slowly.
For Lucas, every hour felt longer than the last.
For Daniel, sleep came only in short, restless moments.
For Lila...
Life went on.
She packed Ben's lunch.
Walked him to school.
Finished her homework.
And every evening, she quietly checked that both Lucas and Daniel had remembered to eat.
Neither man noticed she was taking care of them.
The courtroom was filled again when the judge returned with her decision.
Reporters lined the back wall.
The children's caseworker sat beside them.
Lucas and Daniel exchanged a respectful nod.
The judge opened the file.
"After reviewing all evidence, psychological evaluations, financial reports, and testimony..."
"...this court finds that Mr. Daniel Carter has demonstrated genuine rehabilitation."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"...However..."
The room became still.
"...because of the years of abandonment, immediate full custody would not be in the children's best interest."
Daniel nodded slowly.
He had expected as much.
"The court orders a gradual reunification plan under professional supervision."
A sigh of relief spread through the courtroom.
Then the judge looked directly at Lila.
"There is one more matter."
"Lila, you've asked to speak."
The little girl stood on shaky legs.
She had practiced her words all night.
Still, her voice trembled.
"Your Honor..."
"May I say something?"
"You may."
She looked first at Daniel.
Then at Lucas.
Finally at the judge.
"I know my daddy made a very big mistake."
Daniel lowered his head.
"But..."
"...when I saw him cry..."
"...I believed he was sorry."
She turned toward Lucas.
"And Mr. Davenport..."
"...you found us when nobody else did."
"You never made us feel small."
"You made Ben laugh again."
Her tiny hands twisted together nervously.
"I don't want to choose."
The courtroom fell silent.
"I already lost my mommy."
"I don't want to lose anyone else."
Even the reporters stopped writing.
Lila took a deep breath.
"I don't need one father."
"I need everyone who loves us."
Ben suddenly stood beside her.
"I have two hands."
He lifted them proudly.
"One for Daddy."
He grabbed Daniel's hand.
"One for Mr. Lucas."
He reached for Lucas.
"So nobody gets left behind."
There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom.
Outside, cameras flashed as the hearing ended.
A reporter shouted a question.
"Mr. Davenport!"
"Are you disappointed you won't become their legal father?"
Lucas smiled gently.
"I've learned something."
"Fatherhood isn't a title."
"It's a promise you keep every single day."
Daniel heard those words.
He walked over to Lucas.
Without saying anything...
He extended his hand.
Lucas shook it.
Then Daniel quietly said,
"I can never repay what you've done."
Lucas shook his head.
"You already can."
"How?"
"Don't disappear again."
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"I won't."
That afternoon, Lucas invited everyone to his mansion for dinner.
Lila stopped in the enormous front hall.
"It echoes."
Lucas laughed.
"It always has."
Ben ran through the house.
"So many rooms!"
"Thirty-two."
Ben frowned.
"That's silly."
Lucas smiled.
"Why?"
"Because people can only sleep in one bed."
Everyone laughed.
Even Lucas.
Especially Lucas.

For years he had believed success meant owning more.
A seven-year-old had just explained why it didn't.
