Chapter 4 - The Promise

The following morning, Lucas returned to the old neighborhood.
This time he wasn't alone.
Evelyn stepped out of the car carrying grocery bags.
Behind her came a pediatric doctor, a social worker Lucas personally trusted, and a contractor.
The contractor looked confused.
"Sir... what exactly are we renovating?"
Lucas pointed toward the apartment building.
"We'll know in a minute."
When Lila opened the door, she almost dropped the bucket she had been carrying.
"You came back."
"I said I would."
Ben rushed forward.
"The bread man!"
Lucas laughed as Ben wrapped tiny arms around his leg.
Inside, the apartment was worse than he had imagined.
Water stains covered the ceiling.
One window was sealed with cardboard.
The mattress lay directly on the floor.
There was no proper table.
No heating.
No toys except the old rabbit.
The refrigerator was empty again.
The pediatric doctor quietly examined Ben while pretending it was a game.
The little boy was underweight.
Lila had a persistent cough she insisted was "nothing."
Lucas stepped outside before anyone could see the tears forming in his eyes.
The contractor joined him.
"It'll take months to fix this building."
Lucas shook his head.
"I'm not fixing the building."
"No?"
"I'm buying it."
The contractor stared.
"The whole building?"
"Today."
"And then?"
"No child living here will worry about rent again."
Within forty-eight hours, Davenport Enterprises had legally purchased the aging property.
The news spread quickly.
Some media outlets praised Lucas.
Others accused him of staging an elaborate publicity campaign.
His board of directors was furious.
One investor confronted him during a meeting.
"You're spending company resources on emotion."
Lucas answered calmly.
"No."
"I'm investing in people."
"That's not how business works."
Lucas leaned forward.
"It's how life works."
The room fell silent.
Meanwhile, Lila watched workers repairing broken pipes outside her window.
She couldn't understand why strangers were suddenly painting walls and replacing lights.
She asked Lucas the question that mattered most.
"Do we have to leave?"
"No."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
"And Ben stays with me?"
Lucas hesitated.
He would never lie to her.
"I'll do everything legally possible to keep that promise."
She studied his face for several seconds.
Then she held out her tiny finger.
"My mama always made pinky promises."
Lucas smiled.
He hooked his finger around hers.
"I don't break promises."
Days later, Child Protective Services received an anonymous report about two children living alone.
Lucas had expected it.
He knew this moment would come.
As the caseworker walked toward the apartment door, Lucas was already waiting outside with lawyers, medical records, financial guarantees, and one carefully prepared proposal.
The caseworker looked surprised.
"You've been expecting us."
"Yes."
"And you're representing the children?"
Lucas looked toward the apartment where Lila was comforting Ben.
"I'm hoping to become much more than that."
The caseworker raised an eyebrow.
"What exactly are you asking for, Mr. Davenport?"
Lucas took a slow breath.
Words he had never imagined saying aloud finally left his lips.
"I want the chance to become their family."
The caseworker remained silent.
Then she opened the file.
"Mr. Davenport..."
"What you're asking will not be easy."
Lucas nodded.
"I know."
What he didn't know was that someone else had been reading the news from hundreds of miles away.
A man with tired eyes, an old leather jacket, and a past full of regrets stared at Lila's photograph on a television screen.
His hands began to shake.
He whispered words no one else could hear.
"My children..."
May you like
The father who had vanished years ago...
Had just come back into the story.
