CHAPTER 5 – The Wedding That Began to Collapse

CHAPTER 5 – The Wedding That Began to Collapse

The first cancellation came on a Friday morning.

Vanessa was halfway through a fitting for her custom wedding gown when her phone vibrated.

Mark: We need to postpone the final payment to the venue.

She frowned and immediately called him.

"What do you mean, postpone?"

"I mean exactly that."

"The balance is due today."

"I know."

"So pay it."

There was a long silence.

"I won't."

Vanessa's heart skipped.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about a wedding that no longer feels right."

The room seemed to shrink around her.

Her seamstress quietly stepped outside, sensing the conversation was becoming something private.

"You can't be serious."

"I am."

"Because of Daniel?"

"No."

"Because of Lily?"

"No."

Mark's voice remained calm.

"Because of you."

An hour later, they met at a quiet café.

Neither of them ordered coffee.

Mark placed a folder on the table.

Inside were printed emails from the wedding planner.

Guest lists.

Seating charts.

Messages requesting revisions.

Every document had Vanessa's name on it.

One email caught her attention immediately.

Remove Lily Mercer from the children's table.

She won't be attending.

Please don't mention the change to Mark until everything is finalized.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"You went through my emails?"

"The planner forwarded them after I asked."

"I had a reason."

"I'm listening."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"I wanted one perfect day."

"So did Daniel."

She blinked.

"What?"

"He wanted one day where both of his children were treated equally."

She looked away.

"That's different."

"No."

"It is."

"It isn't."

Mark's voice never rose.

"I've spent three weeks waiting for you to apologize."

"I have nothing to apologize for."

Mark slowly closed the folder.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The answer I didn't want."

Meanwhile, Daniel's life continued quietly.

Saturday morning, he took Ethan and Lily to the local farmers' market.

Lily stopped at every flower stand.

"Daddy..."

She held up a tiny sunflower.

"This one's smiling."

Daniel laughed.

"It does look happy."

"Can we buy it?"

"Of course."

The elderly vendor smiled as Lily carefully counted coins from her little purse.

When they walked away, Ethan whispered,

"She always picks the smallest flower."

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"Why that one?"

Lily shrugged.

"Nobody else wanted it."

His chest tightened.

Even now...

She instinctively chose the flower everyone overlooked.

That afternoon, Daniel received an unexpected visitor.

Mark.

He stood on the porch looking exhausted.

"I owe you an apology."

Daniel folded his arms.

"You didn't exclude my daughter."

"I believed a lie."

"You corrected it."

"Too late."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Mark looked surprised.

"It isn't too late."

"For what?"

"To become the kind of man Lily deserves in her life."

They stood in silence.

Then Lily opened the front door.

"Oh!"

Her eyes lit up.

"Hi, Mr. Mark!"

She proudly held up her sunflower.

"Look what I got!"

Mark smiled despite himself.

"It's beautiful."

"It was lonely."

She said it so naturally.

"So I brought it home."

Mark felt his throat tighten.

A lonely flower.

A lonely little girl.

The same instinct.

The same quiet hope that someone would choose them.

When Lily disappeared back inside, Mark turned to Daniel.

"I don't think I can marry Vanessa."

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said,

"Then don't."

That evening, Vanessa arrived at her parents' house furious.

Her mother opened the door.

"What's wrong?"

"Mark is overreacting."

Elaine Mercer frowned.

"What happened?"

"He says he's reconsidering the wedding."

Her father looked up from his newspaper.

"Because of Lily?"

"Because Daniel poisoned everyone against me."

Robert slowly lowered the paper.

"Did he?"

"What?"

"Did Daniel actually say anything?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"No..."

"Did he ask people to take sides?"

"No."

"Did he post anything online?"

"No."

Robert leaned back.

"Then maybe this isn't Daniel's doing."

The words landed harder than Vanessa expected.

For the first time...

Even her own father wasn't defending her.

The following morning, another phone call arrived.

It was Chloe.

"I'm stepping down."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"I can't be your maid of honor."

"You're joking."

"I'm not."

"You've known me for fifteen years!"

"I have."

"So why?"

Chloe's voice softened.

"Because I finally realized something."

"What?"

"You keep asking people to choose you..."

"...while never choosing anyone else."

The line went dead.

Vanessa stared at the screen in disbelief.

One bridesmaid.

Gone.

Then another text arrived.

Rebecca Reynolds has declined the invitation.

Another.

Helen and James Reynolds will not be attending if Daniel's family remains excluded.

Within twenty-four hours...

May you like

Three empty seats had become eleven.

The wedding was beginning to unravel.
