CHAPTER 4 – The Bride's Secret Begins to Unravel

CHAPTER 4 – The Bride's Secret Begins to Unravel

By Thursday, whispers had become conversations.

Conversations had become questions.

And questions were becoming accusations.

Vanessa arrived at her bridal shower expecting admiration.

Instead, she walked into silence.

Twenty women filled the private room of an upscale restaurant.

Normally, someone would have rushed over to compliment her dress.

This time...

They simply watched.

Her maid of honor, Chloe, finally forced a smile.

"Hey..."

"You okay?"

Vanessa looked around.

"Why is everyone acting weird?"

Nobody answered.

Finally, Mark's sister Rebecca stood.

"I'll ask."

The room became still.

"Did you really ban a nine-year-old from your wedding because of her speech delay?"

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Who told you that?"

Rebecca didn't move.

"So it's true."

"It isn't like that."

"Then explain."

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"You don't understand."

"Help us understand."

"Lily needs constant attention."

"No, she doesn't."

Rebecca had met Lily several times.

She knew better.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"She interrupts."

"She's a child."

"She gets emotional."

"So do brides."

A few women exchanged nervous glances.

One even hid a smile.

Vanessa noticed.

She hated it.

"You all think I'm the villain."

Nobody answered.

Silence was answer enough.

Then Helen Reynolds spoke from the far end of the table.

Quietly.

But firmly.

"My grandson has autism."

Every head turned.

Helen continued.

"When he was little, he cried through my daughter's wedding ceremony."

She smiled softly.

"The video captured every second."

Vanessa looked confused.

Helen reached into her purse and placed an old photograph on the table.

A laughing bride...

Holding a crying little boy.

"It's my favorite wedding picture."

The room fell silent.

"Perfect weddings are forgotten."

Helen looked directly at Vanessa.

"Kindness isn't."

Vanessa felt heat rising into her face.

For the first time...

She realized she was losing something far more important than an argument.

She was losing respect.

May you like

And once respect leaves a room...

It rarely comes back.
