CHAPTER 7 – THE LAST PROMISE

CHAPTER 7 – THE LAST PROMISE

The text message stayed on Liam's phone for less than thirty seconds before it was forwarded to Marcus and the entire security division.

Stop digging... or Emily dies before the truth lives.

Marcus looked up from his tablet.

"We're moving Miss Carter immediately."

Liam was already walking toward the elevator.

"She isn't taking the train home."

Across the city...

Emily stepped out of the design studio carrying a small paper bag.

She had stayed late again—not because anyone ordered her to, but because old habits were hard to break.

Snow drifted gently through the evening air.

She never noticed the gray sedan parked across the street.

Inside sat a man wearing black gloves.

His eyes never left her.

A photograph rested on the passenger seat.

Emily's face was circled in red.

His phone vibrated.

Target confirmed.

He started the engine.

Emily reached the train platform just as a voice echoed behind her.

"Miss Carter!"

She turned.

Marcus and two security officers hurried toward her.

"Mr. Vance sent us."

Before she could answer—

The gray sedan accelerated onto the sidewalk.

People screamed.

The driver aimed directly at Emily.

Marcus reacted instantly, shoving her behind a concrete pillar.

The car slammed into a metal bench, sending sparks across the station.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and disappeared into the crowd before police could arrive.

Emily stared at the wreckage, shaking uncontrollably.

Liam arrived minutes later.

Without saying a word, he wrapped his coat around her shoulders.

"You were right," she whispered.

"They were waiting."

Liam looked at the damaged platform.

"No."

"They were hunting."

That night, police recovered the abandoned car.

It had been stolen.

No fingerprints.

No DNA.

Professional.

Exactly as Marcus feared.

But the driver had made one mistake.

A disposable phone had slipped beneath the driver's seat.

Its last incoming call came from a private number registered decades earlier to one company:

Vance Holdings.

Not Liam's company.

His father's.

The following morning, Liam visited the luxury nursing facility.

The elderly man waiting inside introduced himself with trembling hands.

"My name is Henry Harrison."

"I was your father's attorney."

Liam remained silent.

Henry slid an old leather folder across the table.

"I've carried this for twenty years."

"Because your father ordered me never to destroy it."

Inside were contracts...

Bank records...

And one signed confession.

Henry closed his eyes.

"Your father loved you."

"He searched for you day and night."

"But someone inside the company used your disappearance."

"To seize control."

Liam frowned.

"Who?"

Henry whispered one name.

Victor Kane.

The former Chief Financial Officer.

The man who had quietly disappeared after Charles Vance's death fifteen years earlier.

Henry continued.

"Victor bribed Martha to stay away."

"But she never spent a dollar."

"She kept every cent untouched."

"She planned to return it when she found you."

Emily remembered the iron box.

The money had never been there.

Henry smiled sadly.

"Because your mother donated every penny anonymously to shelters after Victor died overseas."

"She refused to keep money that came from a frightened child's tears."

Liam closed his eyes.

That was Martha.

Even in impossible circumstances...

She chose kindness.

Marcus entered the room.

"Sir."

"We located Victor Kane."

Everyone turned.

Marcus shook his head.

"His grave."

"He really died twelve years ago."

Liam frowned.

"Then who sent the threats?"

Marcus placed another file on the desk.

"Victor had a son."

May you like

"Michael Kane."

"And he believes exposing his father's crimes will destroy what's left of his family name."
