CHAPTER 4 – THE LETTER HIDDEN INSIDE THE FLOWER

CHAPTER 4 – THE LETTER HIDDEN INSIDE THE FLOWER

Emily insisted on returning to her apartment later that afternoon.

"It isn't much," she said quietly as Liam's driver stopped outside a weathered brick building.

Liam looked up.

The roof sagged.

Paint peeled from the walls.

A broken mailbox leaned sideways.

"You live here?"

She smiled awkwardly.

"It's affordable."

Inside...

The apartment was barely large enough for one person.

Secondhand furniture.

Books stacked everywhere.

A tiny sewing machine near the window.

Photographs covered one wall.

Almost every picture showed the same woman.

Warm brown eyes.

Gentle smile.

Martha.

Liam stopped walking.

He recognized her instantly.

Twenty years had added wrinkles to her face.

But there was no mistake.

"It's really her..."

Emily noticed the tears gathering in his eyes.

"You knew my mother."

He nodded.

"She saved a frightened little boy who lied about his name because he was afraid people would only care that he was rich."

Emily smiled softly.

"That sounds like something she'd do."

She opened an old wooden chest.

"My mother kept everything."

Inside were faded birthday cards...

Tiny paper cranes...

Old recipes...

And dozens...

No...

Hundreds...

Of pale blue origami flowers.

Liam knelt beside the chest as though standing would be disrespectful.

Emily carefully picked up one flower.

"She never let anyone unfold these."

"She said every flower carried someone's hope."

Liam's heartbeat quickened.

"May I?"

Emily hesitated.

Then nodded.

His fingers trembled as he unfolded the delicate paper.

Inside...

Tiny handwriting appeared.

Not decoration.

A message.

If you are reading this, it means you finally found your way back. Don't blame yourself for getting lost. Children never choose the storms adults create. Live kindly. That will always be enough. — Martha

Liam could no longer hold back his tears.

She had written it...

For him.

Twenty years ago.

She had believed he might return someday.

Even after all those years.

Emily covered her mouth in shock.

"I never knew there were words inside."

They opened another flower.

Another message.

Another.

Each contained a different note of encouragement.

Some were for grieving widows.

Some for lonely children.

Some for strangers fighting invisible battles.

Martha had turned simple paper into quiet acts of love.

Then Emily reached the bottom of the chest.

There was one final flower.

Unlike the others, it was wrapped in a small piece of white cloth.

On the cloth was written:

For Liam. Only if he ever comes back.

Neither of them moved.

Liam stared at the package as though it were the most valuable thing in the world.

With trembling hands, Emily placed it gently into his palm.

He unfolded it slowly.

Inside was not just another message.

A small brass key slipped onto the wooden floor.

Taped beside it was a note in Martha's unmistakable handwriting.

Liam, if life ever brings you back to this home, the truth you've been searching for is waiting where we first met. Don't come alone. There are people who never wanted you to remember me.

Liam's expression changed instantly.

From grief...

To alarm.

He looked at Emily.

"Your mother wasn't just hiding memories."

He picked up the tiny brass key.

"She was protecting a secret."

At that exact moment—

A loud crash echoed from outside the apartment.

Someone had just knocked over the trash bins beneath the fire escape.

Liam walked to the window.

A black SUV sped away without its headlights on.

Someone had been watching the apartment.

May you like

And now they knew...

The final flower had been opened.
